Can anyone provide advice about how to decide between Univ of Pittsburgh and Northwestern for medical school, with respect to preparing students for a career in Neurosurgery (ie. residency and beyond)? I am currently faced with this decision, and hope to pursue neurosurgery after medical school. Thanks very much! 🙄

Both are good programs, but Northwestern has the better reputation as far as residency is concerned. I would choose based on which school you would rather attend for 4 years, rather than which has the better residency program.

Thanks! I appreciate the response. 😉

While I am only a medical student, I would say that Pittsburgh has an upper hand. I believe they have more cases as well as a stronger research program. Also with Pittsburgh you are just competing with 1 other residency program for cases, whereas in Chicago there are 5 total programs (of course Chicago is larger and has a larger population base). I have always heard great things about UPittsburgh from my mentor who did her residency there. NU has has some issue from what I have heard fwiw.

I don't know how pitt did this year in the Match but Nwestern had two kids go to Harvard. Took both spots there. There was one kid who went to Cleveland Clinic, and one to WashU. Solid Match for us this year. Go Nwestern. Hells yeah.

Rotated at NW (matched this year as well). Highly recommended; try not to schedule any sub-I's that overlap with CNS though.

Met all the NW home students; all top-notch guys.
