Hey guys, I am one looking to apply to SMP's soon. However, my undergraduate school was a large state school. Do SMP's care which undergrad you went to, or do they consider it as a negative? My GPA is a mediocre 3.1 in Biochem (bio major chem minor).

Where you went to undergrad is generally irrelevant, for SMPs as well as for med school.

Exceptions to this fall into two categories:
1. Personal bias of your reviewer, ie if they just had an intern from your undergrad who was worthless, then they're not too excited to see your school. Nothing you can do about it.
2. School may have a ranking system for undergrad institutions, where a 4.0 at Harvard is better than a 4.0 at UMass (for instance). The only school I personally know of that does this is LECOM. It's my understanding that this kind of ranking is used as a part of numerically assessing candidates, and frankly, I can't see it mattering that much. Regardless, nothing you can do about it.

Biochem is typically viewed as a difficult major, and I'd be surprised if a med school that ranks undergrad schools doesn't also rank majors. So that's in your favor.

Best of luck to you.
