Is there anyplace on the main app. to put college research if not done on animals? (research on incidence of disease in zygomatic twins) I didn't list it last yr since I found nowhere to put it. Since then, I have read on SDN that others have said schools like to see that you have done research even if not on animals ...so if they like to see it-where can you list it? Thanks.

You might invoke the wrath of the board, so I will give a quick tip: try a search about these types of things. The short answer is that most biomedical type research (which it seems that yours would be in this category) is considered relevant (meaning veterinary experience on VMCAS) as long it is original research done under the direction of a PhD, MD or DVM. As people (I believe Kate G) have said before, schools are interested in more than just animal research. Try a search though, there are many more comments.

I did do a search for this answer and read lots of posts where folks debated whether or not the research had to be on animals. Some thougnt it did; others did not. That's what prompted my question because my final belief was that they did like to see any kind of research but no one indicated where it would go. It can't go under work experience and it is not vet experience nor animal experience. Sorry if I invoked anyone's wrath-it's just a question after all.

If this is true research (meaning you did an original research project under the supervision of a scientist, MD PhD or DVM) then this is most certainly veterinary experience. The regulations are quite clear that any biomedical research counts as veterinary research, which is what I stated in my post. Read the instructions on the VMCAS for veterinary experience. Sorry if my response seemed rude, I didn't mean for it to be.

i like how you guys just had an entire conversation via headlines 🙂

yup, any research done under guidance of someone official should be put under the vet experiences. at least that's where i put my anatomy and neuro research, despite the fact that there were no live animals involved, nor where any DVMs.

Thanks guys. Under vet experience it will go -the no animal, no DVM present thing made me really question why it would go there at all.

Hmmm. I didn't know that you could count research under a PhD as veterinary experience 😀

Ok, so if I have researach experience that could also be categorized as work experience (i.e. I got paid for it), which category would it be better received in?

I'm low on veterinary experience, but if I take the research job out of my work experience, my work experience will be kinda bare.

thanks

Since most schools use vet experience as one of the factors in their rubric then I think you are going to want your vet experience to be the highest priority. Plus, if it is research then it is vet experience. I also get paid to do research (although whether a graduate stipend can be considered pay is another debate completely....), but it is still vet experience 🙂.

Ok, so I actually looked this up and now I'm not so sure... is this the quote you guys found on the VMCAS page?

"The experiences included in this section should relate to any veterinary clinical, agribusiness, health science, or research experiences that you have had with veterinarians, other health scientists, or other professionals."

This can be read two ways:
1) Any veterinary [type of] clinical, agribusiness, health science or research experience that you have had with vets, other health scientists...
2) Any veterinary clinical or agribusiness or health science or research experience that you have had with vets, other health scientists.....

I mean, I worked at a human clinic for awhile with MDs and RNs. That is health science experience under a health scientist/professional. Does that mean that this could be counted as veterinary experience? 🙁

I also found this chart on the VMCAS page:
"Use this chart to understand where you should include specific experiences."

So now I'm not so sure about the whole any research experience = vet experience thing.....
🙁

I don't know if human clinical experience counts or not. Not my area of expertise

BUT.....research experience most certainly counts. Vet schools realize that the future of medicine (human or vet) is dependent on a number of things, one of which is strong research programs. Basic science is what drives applied (clinical) science. I don't know any other way to say it. BTW, I did my PhD research on a human disease at a med school and it is still vet experience.

I guess maybe a point of reference change may help. If you are interested in research aspects of veterinary medicine then research experience (whether it was dealing with animals or not) that can be broadly applied to veterinary medicine is absolutely relevant. Even if you are not interested in research, your experience in this aspect of the profession also counts. The point of the experience sections is to show that you have a commitment to vet med and that you have tried different areas of the profession and have an idea what you are getting into. You could also contact specific schools and ask them what they think.
