no beating around the bush, im not really good at school and currently i have a 2.6 GPA ( i had only one science class though, the rest GE) i want to know if i HAVE ANY CHANCE TO GET IN the opto school. i have asked this Q numerous ways from everyone and b/c my Q was stated falsely so i don't be ashamed, i never got an answer that i was looking for. i live in california so i guess if i have ANY CHANCE i will go to opto college or Berkly. pls dont BS it, if you think no don say maybe say NO. only if you really think maybe then say so. and also don say bad words b/c i don't want to close this thread. i hope no one is in my boat and if there is anyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy one in my boat, i would be glad to hear your story.

what does it matter what we think anyway... we are not admissions...

If you want to become an optometrist.. you are gonna have to put in the EXTRA work so that you will do well in school...

I don't get things the first time.. so as a result.. I have to read/outline/study a lot more than the next person... so what.. this is what I want.. and no undergrad class is going to stop me.. lol..

Aim for it!!

A couple of things here....

1) Why are you listed as pre-dental?

2) You need to have a real HONEST discussion with yourself about why you're not "good at school." If a 2.6 is the best of your ability in general ed classes, you have little chance of being admitted and even if you squeak through, you have little chance of completing the program.

Understand that that does not in any way make you a "bad" or a "stupid" person. It just means that you might want to consider exploring other options because something like optometry probably isn't going to be a good fit for you.

Optometry school is much more intense than undergrad. With that said, if you're "not good at school", it doesn't sound as if it's the right thing for you. As someone else mentioned, you're really going to have to get yourself together and bring that GPA WAY up if you want a shot at being admitted! Science classes are going to be tougher than gen eds. Definitely have a talk with someone, maybe a counselor at your school, and figure out what the problem is and what you can do to bring those grades up!!

Also, Berkeley is a very competitive school, their average entering GPA is a 3.53. I don't know much about that school as I didn't look at it, but I'm reasonably sure they won't accept anyone below a 3.0, unless there are some extreme circumstances.

http://www.opted.org/files/public/Profile_of_Entering_Class_2008.pdf This has the average entering GPA of all schools.

You say you only had one science class so far, the rest is GE. How'd you do in the science class? It's unlikely that a student would have a 2.6 GPA in GE classes and then have a 4.0 in science classes (given you had more science classes) but maybe you'll be an exception. I would say take a few more science classes and then reassess your situation after that.

I hate to get philosophical since you may not be the philosophical type, but there's no shame in doing something else. Economics is a fun major. So is architecture. In Europe, philosophers are celebrities. It seems like you're not motivated.

You can always just drop everything and travel the world like this guy: http://www.awayawhile.com/

I kid you not. I bet he's lived several lifetimes by 30 what the average optometry student will never see even at their deathbed.

In the end, you've got to motivate yourself to do what you want. If you really want to be successful (in anything, not just optometry), you wouldn't spend your time on a goofy forum asking about grades. Adam Smith came up with his ideas on vacation in France. Darwin was at King's College (a bible school) when he discovered his love for insects. Darwin was horrible at biology but brilliant in theology.

I haven't helped one bit, have I?

For Berkeley, I would say no. Why are you so enamored by California? Boston is a nice place to live. So is Chicago. If you're not inquisitive, you won't succeed in science.

Just based off your self-esteem, I would say you have no chance.

Judging by your previous posts, you seem to be either quite lost, or enjoy wasting other people's time. You've recently posted in optometry, dental, pharmacy and PT forums asking misleading questions and giving false information (such as mentioning how you just finished dental school). If you're trying to figure out a career path, speak with a career counselor. Do your own actual research on the professions first, before you come to these forums and expect others to answer your questions for you.

And as always, SEARCH THE FORUMS FIRST before starting yet another thread. I just did a search for "low gpa" and over 200 threads came up just in the optometry forums.

thank you very much for your comment, you have a very high self esteem, and i need to be more confident and that's for sure!!

1. i accidentally chose pre-dental instead of pre-optometry, i fixed it, thanx

2. i actually thought about it but i just cant convince myself to do anything else but optometry. it just such a nice career. by no mean im looking at the income, perhaps dentist and general doctors most likely will make more money than optometrist, i rather see myself as optometrist than anything else, that's just me.

i like to do research on everything and i don't see anything wrong with that and posting it. i don't want to be glued in pre-opto form like some people. and i don't waste people time, this is just discussion, if you don't wanna participate, no one forced you to do so.

It's a waste of time for people to answer your questions earnestly when you're asking hypothetical questions about false situations.

Asking questions that have been answered a million times while expecting others to provide the answers for you is not doing "research". My point is that if you use the search function you will more than likely find the answers to your questions. But to give you the quick answer, a 2.6 is far too low for probably any professional school. You need to raise your GPA significantly and get a ton of experience in whatever profession you choose. No, it is certainly not impossible but it will take a lot of effort.

I think he's made his decision by changing his status to pre-optometry. Some of the questions on this forum makes me fear my fellow students. Which is not what I want. But whatever, I assume every class has its share of sickos, sluts, alcoholics, gambling addicts, dumb people. I think it'll be quite fun.

Ruskyline, have you thought about working on a cruise ship? You get to see the world and its a ton of fun. Cruise ships are not as good as ocean liners but ocean liners generally hire people who have worked on cruise ships. Good food too. You get to meet tons of people who want a good time (and by good time, i mean sex).

In another life, I want to learn nautical sciences and manage a yacht.

It'll be an uphill battle, but I think it is possible for you still to be accepted into an O.D. program. Your G.P.A. is very low — you seem to understand this — but you say it's composed almost entirely of non-science classes. Well, if you ace almost all your prerequisites, and blow the O.A.T. our of the water, honestly, I think your odds a pretty damned good. That said, you need to look at yourself likely more than you do at schools: Why are your grades as they are? Do you think you will go on to ace most of the prerequisites of optometry school and to do very well on the O.A.T.? It's not enough to figure, "I've screwed around enough: do I still have time to do [this thing]"? You have to ask if you feel you are able invest the effort into pulling it off. Are you?

They get fired for that. Seriously.

I think you get fired for sex at work anywhere. You're suppose to try to do it discreetly. Which I think only adds to the excitement.

UCLA made the mistake of having some of their study rooms contain no windows. I heard that at optometry schools, since the facilities are open late... well, you can use your imagination.

🤣 🤣 🤣

There's 3 new schools opening up this year right?

Whether a 2.6 is good enough to get in will depend on the applicant pool to these (and other) schools.

2.6 sounds low, but I believe someone in the US will get into optometry school with that GPA this year.

Hey, I am kinda on the same boat except mine is about to sink .. lol
I need general advice from anyone who can help
My situation is complicated and I guess worst than yours but I'm still dreaming big :S , My goal was to get into dental school. I decided this in my 4rth year so it was too late to fix my mistakes 🙁 .. I am done my undergrad in biological sciences and my gpa is cum 6.05/13 and major 5.8/13. I had mostly B's, C's and D's :S. I guess it comes out to be 2.5/4. I might be wrong. I still decided to write my DAT ended up getting a 15/30. Dont blame the score, I just wasn't prepared. It was an unexpected decision and I don't have any regrets on it
I admit that it is my fault that I am in a situation like this today and I am regreting it bigg time. I have no idea what to do now.
My next step is what I'm concerned about ... I was thinking of going back to the university and retaking my courses just to upgrade. Or go into B.Ed. I did try college programs but they were all full and I can't waste another year just waiting. I am extremely confused, tried going to my academic advisor but he let me down too. It's not impossible to undo my mistakes. I am serious about studying ahead and I would do anything to have a successful career.
Please help me out !!

I'm not sure what to say, except about the line, "It's not impossible to undo my mistakes": The fact is, it may be. If you do very well now — and, of course, there's the possibility you won't — you'll still have to compete with students who did very well from the beginning. If there are enough of them to fill all the seats in the program to which you'd like to apply, your mistakes will (and, perhaps arguably, "should") prevent your admission. To take it a bit farther, let's imagine a good medical school: invariably, it's extremely competitive, and, no matter how hard you work or well you do, now, it's just about certain you will not be accepted by one. Optometry colleges are more forgiving than medical, but, bear in mind, there is the strong likelihood that no amount of effort or success will make up for past mistakes if there's too much competition when you apply.
