I didn't get into OT school this year, but it was a real stretch because I had like none of my prereq's done and applied anyway expecting to give them my final grades and be accepted. Anyway, I'm going to apply to a TON of places next year, but still very bummed over the whole situation. Anyway, I know it's important to stay "involved" for when you apply next year. I am currently on unemployment and would like to keep that so I don't want to get a job. Does anyone know of any ways to get experience/hours off the books??? or something like that?? And yes, I have thought of volunteering but as a poor college student is nice to get some money! lol.

So many things wrong with that sentence. Glad the rest of us can work so you don't have to get a job this year.

I think you misinterpreted. I am not getting an "on the books" job because I don't want to lose my unemployment. It's a blessing having the time to concentrate on my prereq's. Sorry if that bothers you. Anyone in my situation would do the same thing. I just wanted to know if there are any "off the books" types of jobs I can get to make money and keep the unemployment.

I agree with MOTstudent....I understand its a blessing for you.. but not for everyone else who is working and knowing that they are helping pay the unemployment for people like you who dont really want to get a job.

Have you thought about respite? You wouldn't be able to stay on unemployment but it would be a flexible job. Some states with budget cut no longer have respite but it may be worth looking into.

Hi, I have to say I agree with the other replies but I also understand where you're coming from. I quit my job last year to concentrate on prereqs and volunteering but I did think about how nice it would be to be collecting unemployment.

For the sake of helping you stay engaged in OT and become a more desirable candidate next year, you should probably take advantage of the extra time by volunteering/observing/shadowing - volunteer everyplace that will have you. Find OTs that actually care about the people shadowing them and soak up as much as possible. I attribute my getting into school this year to all the time I spent in different settings.

If you need to supplement your unemployment, I recommend using craigslist to look for jobs by typing "therapy aide" - that way you'll find PT and OT jobs. Aides don't need a license. My job is on the books but it's probably possible to find one off the books. (Noteworthy: I think I only got the PT aide position because of all the experience I had shadowing OTs in a similar setting.)

Good luck!

I quit my full-time job and kept my part-time job to go to school full-time cause it was taking me forever. I think you would be a more desirable candidate if you finished up those pre-reqs. At least you are being productive trying to go school and better your career. My mom let's me live in her home rent free as long as I am in school. If I quit she says I gotta start paying rent:laugh:
