Just in case medical school doesn't pan out, I figured that there should be a plan B. I was thinking along the lines of OD schools and after taking that for 2 years, taking the USMLE and transferring to any MD schools. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

ha, yeah my "plan B" was "curl up in the fetal position and cry"....I busted this one out in an interview and it actually went over really well, got my acceptance from that school in a week or two...maybe they actually believed that that was my plan b! 😀

Medicine was my Plan B.

Is that OD, or DO???

Yeah....I kinda messed that up, It's DO. It was not a well researched plan B.

OD isn't a bad plan B, its a cool job, good pay, nice hours, own practice.

I think there is only 1 school(can't remember which one)that will let you transfer from DO to MD, but they have not allowed anyone to for several years, and you have to have a very compelling reason to do so. Why would you do that? I know some people use DO as a backup, but IMHO, your plan is just plain wrong. If your going to use DO as a backup, at least have the decency to finish the program. Otherwise, reapply for MD and leave the DO spot for somebody who will at least finish the degree. DO as a first choice is GREAT, and DO as a backup to MD is acceptable, but if you are not willing nor have no desire to become a DO, do NOT enter a DO program.

If you are not going to to reapply then the other way to transfer into an MD school could be via going to Carribbean schools like Ross.

The Carribbean schools are MD schools. Also, transfering is not easily done, especially from a foreign school into a U.S. school.

if you go the DO route, you might as well stay. transferring from DO to MD school is something I have not yet heard anyone accomplish recently. The only thing i have heard of is students from DO schools getting allo residencies.

other than the unfortunate MDs who make DOs feel like they don't belong, they are still doctors and do everything an MD can.

So what is your plan, Xanax and alcohol, pheonobarb, tricyclics (these are nice!), or fill your mouth with water and a snub nose under the chin. Just kidding!

i've always wanted to move to hollywood and give acting a shot. actually, plan b might be a bit more fun for a bit! 👍

[Disclaimer: I apologize for the harsh tone of this post - I know the OP was looking for advice, but unfortunately I've lost my muzzle]

Transfer from DO to MD school? That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard.

DO IS medical school, it's NOT some remedial master's program or some post-bacc linker thingy, it's freaking medical school and you become a doctor.

So, there is No transferring from DO to an MD school!
There is no taking some "extra classes" after you get your DO, in an attempt to convert it to an MD.
There is no "can a DO write MD in some states?"

Why the hell would you want to do those things??

Stop listening to old fogie physicians who went to med school before the MCAT, stop listening to FMG's who think they know better, and stop listening to Carrib grads whose hippocratic oath begins with "My white coat still says MD on it..." (not that I have anything against any of the aforementioned)

Bottom line DO=MD, MD=DO, and do what you feel in your heart 👍

HAHA, medicine is my Plan B. Didn't get drafted in the NBA, and my record deal hasn't come through.

I've put faith in the system, maxing out my odds, I'm sure I have an equal chance of winning the powerball or getting into a medschool. One of them will come through, or I'll have to rely on poker, texas, world series 2005, who needs a white coat when you can get a cool bracelet. 5million is cool too.

I'm sure there are others who OD'd after failing gain acceptance to med school. I don't see it as a good option though.......

I thought "plan b" was a form of emergency contraception. Are the above-listed appropriate forms of emergency contraception? Well, I guess I'll learn the answer to that question after the MD. Or a google search.

Anyway, to the OP, I don't think the DO-MD transfer route is a path well-traveled - and since there are probably more than a few people who'd do it if they could, it's likely that such switches aren't allowed. Not sure about this, though.

Please do the osteopathic profession a favor and do not bother applying to DO schools. If you want an MD, then apply to US, Canadian, and Carribean allopathic medical schools. It angers me extremely when someone like yourself considers a DO school second-rate. DO schools are medical schools, just like MD schools. MD = DO period. Both earn the same salaries in a respective specialty, both earn the same respect, etc... Both MDs and DOs strive to serve the community and improve health care for society. Osteopathic medical schools are not sub-standard education. So please, if you do not believe in the philosophy, education, and training of DO schools, be ashamed of having a DO after your name, and/or even consider transferring to an MD school, don't even bother. It would be a disgrace to what A.T. Still stood for and you would be taking a seat from a more deserving student that would be proud to be a DO and be willing to promote awareness of osteopathic medicine.

Its always great to have a Plan B. However, last time I checked "DO" schools were medical schools--they just have a different philosophy behind practicing medicine. You can go the DO route and still take the USMLE to get into an allopathic residency. If you want to transfer just to get the MD, then go to the Caribbean. Just for your information, some DO schools are ranked well above many MD schools. As a future doc, you should know to do your research!
