I went to dental hygiene school as a backup plan a few years ago, incase dental school never happened for me. A career in dental hygiene nowadays is almost non-existent, so I went back a obtained my Masters in Biomedical Sciences this past June to try the dental school process again. I re-took the DAT for my third time and didn't perform the greatest. My app was completed late because of of taking my DAT in October. I know I'm probably in the next batch of "possible interview invites" but I have not heard anything yet and am having my doubts unfortunately.
I commend your effort and passion for dentistry. Hope you get in this cycle!I went to dental hygiene school as a backup plan a few years ago, incase dental school never happened for me. Thank you!
My plan B would be to just retake the DAT because of my 16 in RC.... Otherwise nothing else, I personally think my RC is the only flaw in my app.

Do not lose your hope. You still have a shot this year. Not hearing much before Dec 1 doesn't dictate anything yet. If things really don't go right, there are still a lot of things you can do to strengthen your application. Work as a volunteer in a research lab, then apply to NSF or NIH fellowship so you can get paid as well as listing it on your app. Research participation is a big plus to some schools. You can retake DAT, start applying early in the cycle, and do lots of volunteer work at a dental office as well as hospital (this will ensure your interest in medicine and helping others in general).I went to dental hygiene school as a backup plan a few years ago, incase dental school never happened for me. This is my 3rd application cycle (graduated in 2010 with my BS). I already did an MS. I'm signing up for the Peace Corp because I like to travel and I want to make a positive difference in the world. If I still want to do dentistry when I get back, I'll retake classes and the DAT and I'll be fine.
Plan B: Actually attend post-dec 1st interviews haha. Hoping to not have to though![]()
Hey dantemac, have you heard from Penn yet? I heard people are getting calls, I haven't received anything yet though.
