I have a question regarding the "plan on taking" designation on the apps. At issue is that some of the schools require me to retake a core course, while others don't (yay for different policies ^^), hence why it needs to be in the app. Will I be held accountable to retake the course if I end up getting an acceptance to a school that doesn't require me to retake it? (i.e. a full acceptance and NOT a conditional one) Or will all the schools assume that I will be retaking the course regardless?

thanks.

I asked this question a week ago. My situation wasn't a retake. I don't want to take ochem 2 and I have ochem 1 and biochem so I am not going to put I plan on taking it and if I get into a school that requires it, I will will then take it.

I think the plan is must necessary for both of you.

Well, I kinda have that sequence as well, where biochem will be substituting for a chem requirement. So far, the only DO school that seems to flat out reject that is New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology. They just won't allow the biochem substitution, but I think most of the rest accept it. So, in your case, unless you're applying to this aforementioned DO school, you can probably leave it out of your app.

In my case, some of the DO schools accept a C- in a core class, while others don't. The ones that don't accept C- have told me that the retake is required prior to matriculation if the person is conditionally accepted, which is why I have to put the "planned on retake." However, I'm wondering for the schools that do accept a C-, is it just assumed that they will still expect a retake if it's listed as "plan on retake" in the app even if they offer an acceptance that isn't conditional?

The retake is going to benefit you no matter what and make you more competitive (assuming your grades improve). Just go ahead take the retake(s). That way you're covered in any event.

Right now plan on the retake. Don't count on getting into one of the programs that allow the C-. If you get an acceptance (to one of the more lenient schools) before you've retaken the course simply call the school and ask if you need to take it or not. My guess is that they'll say no, you don't need to retake.

I know what you're asking here is more about the fact that you've made a "written" promise to take this course and you're afraid they're expecting it, but if the school doesn't require it and they've accepted you, they're probably going to let it go.

Hope you can avoid the retake! :xf:

thanks for the info guys.

I'm hoping my overall app will make up for this 🙁

OSUCOM won't accept it either and KCOM said they would assuming the grade in ochem1 and biochem where acceptable, and all the ones that did said it needs to include the lab. Except for DMU, but they only require ochem 1 anyway.

No problem, poopyhead. :meanie: Had to.

I'm sure you already know this but applying early is key. Ideally you could get your acceptance by this Fall (if applying this cycle) and you'll have enough time to plan a retake during the Spring, if need be. Otherwise you may end up taking it during the summer before matriculation, which I personally wouldnt enjoy very much.

weird OK...I guess it might vary between different undergrads then. My undergrad has a "unique chemistry sequence" that all the med schools are suppose to know, although the advisors said they sometimes have to mail out a policy letter to the med school if they won't accept the sequence.

Anyways, that's good info...I've had a hard time to get OSU COM to respond to any of my emails, so I guess I won't bother after what you just said. Have any other schools directly said they won't allow the substitution?

That's very troubling though. My biochem didn't have a lab component, although the adcoms I asked didn't bring up the lab requirement. I wonder if that's going to be an issue.

Most students at Cal take Chem 1A, 3A/3AL, 3B/3BL and MCB 102 or MCB 100A/Chem C130 and classify 1A / 3A/3AL as General Chemistry and 3B / 3BL /MCB 102 or MCB 100A/Chem C130 as Organic Chemistry.
