I have a question that will really help me in planning ahead for the next year or two. I am currently a 3rd year student in my rotations. I am engaged and we are trying to pick out a date for the wedding.

I will graduate June 11th and from what i hear, most residency programs begin on July 1st. Does anyone have any input as far as whether June18th would be a good date or will this be a time when there is a lot going on.

I just dont really know if there is anything that needs to be done right before starting the new programs.

Any input would be great!!!

Assume that you will be busy with orientation and potentially moving from June 15 onward. Get married during the Spring of 4th year. You won't have anything else going on.

You should be aware that in addition to the moving and general freak-out happening before residency, that many require an orientation which can variably start days to weeks before July 1.

Getting married on June 18th with the potential for your program to require you to be there before that date or shortly after means no time for honeymooning and generally getting settled. I have heard on SDN of programs starting as early as the first week of June. My residency started around June 22nd for orientation.

It appears to me that after the instillation of the 80 hr workweek, more and more programs are requiring new interns to show up early, as the current Chiefs leave, because they cannot work the existing residents more to cover the loss of manpower.

Get married earlier in the year.

I vote for April. It's after the match, and long before the end-of-the-year festivities in med school. You should be able to schedule an empty month then.

Plus, if you wait until school's out, don't expect classmates to attend. They'll have too much to do.

thanks for the advice. we are thinking about may14th now. We have to have all of our graduation requirements filled by may20th. I think that i should be able to finish by may9th and schedule in a couple weeks vacation then.

let me know what you think!

That's probably wiser. More and more residencies are moving orientation, ACLS and other housekeeping things to June, so you may well be tied up in much of that month.
