Hi guys,
I would just like to know if it's common/possible to do a urology residency and then apply to plastic surgery?
thanks for your answers

yes. anything is possible, but those are two totally different fields. i say that to say, i would be interested in finding out if after your urology training, would you be elgible for 2yr fellowship in plastics or would you have to go to pick up more years of general surgery. many urology programs are 2 yrs general, but i hear those are being phased out for 1year general and rest urology. i'm sure 1yr general isn't enough to do plastics.

good luck, and if you do it, thats a nice pay check!

Actually, Urology is an eligible pathway to enter an Independent Plastics residency. It's not often used and isn't advisable -- General Surgery is the best route, although ENT is a very good way to do your prelim training. The fact is, if you want to be a plastician, you're best off trying for an integrated or combined position.

Thank you all for your input.
I was asking this question because I think it's an interresting and seldom combination (urology+plastic).
Also, as I am an IMG, it will be easier for me to get into urology (my father in Law being American and a urologist).

This combination is definitely possible, especial with the reasons listed above, ie genital reconstructive. Same thing for ENT, cuz they do naturally do fellowships in facial plastics. Ortho is another route that is ELIGIBLE, but not often used. Other than ENT, although some people take these eligible routes, the MAJORITY go through general surgery (and are finishing general surgery not just 3 years) and then do plastics fellowship, + possible further subspecialization within plastics. Even though there is the direct 5/6/7 year plastics, there still are less than 100 spots/year, and most do the above route.

Another note to the original poster, if you look to train in the United States, is that urology is NO cake walk to get into, especially as an IMG. I hope your father can open some doors or you have opened them yourself with research and such, because it is up there with ENT and Ortho in competitiveness. Top surgery programs are just as hard to get into too (although I don't claim to know what the statistics are for what kind of programs send people to plastics). You will be the best gauge of how strong a candidate you are though. In my OPINION, as I am no residency/fellowship coordinator, your best bet would be to go into general surgery and prove yourself there before securing plastics fellowship.

Good luck.

For someone who took that route (professional and it appears from his picture, personally), see http://www.altermd.com

I am sorry for contributing to the downfall of this site, but am I the only one who giggled that Dr. "Alter" is the self described "recognized leader in female genital surgery, labiaplasty or labia minora surgery, penis / scrotal surgery, penis enhancement, and transsexual surgery"

I am such a child sometimes.

Not at all...as a matter of fact, I was a bit disappointed that no one had commented on that before now.

I always thought it a bit amusing in addition to the fact that his own face appears to be "altered"!
