There's a DMD near me with a cosmetic facial surgery practice -- is something that you can usually do? He has a DMD and he's certified in OMFS, but he's offering rhinoplasty, cheek implants, face lifts, chemical peels, you name it. I wasn't aware you could offer this without an MD? He's making money hand over fist - would it be a realistic possibility to open a cosmetic surgery practice with an MD or is this just an anomaly?

Thanks

Yes. Most states allow single-degree OMSs to get an elective facial cosmetic surgery permit. An MD is only required if you also want to do breast implants, tummy tucks, etc. And if you're a dual-degree OMS, you'd probably do a PRS residency after OMS if you want to do full-service plastics.

What is a Facial Cosmetic Surgery Permit?

In most states if you have a dental license you can cut anything on the face or anterior neck you please so long as you are insured to provide that service and meet the standard of care. FTFY

You must be referring to Dr. Anil Punjabi at apunjabi(dot)com

It can be done, but don't think it will be easy. If it were so easy, everyone would be doing it.

Only from the thyroid cartilage and up. OMFS deal with the face all day and take into consideration your occlusion. No ENT or plastic deals with proper occlusion. Plastic surgeons' scope is the entire body whereas the OMFS only deals with the face. OMFS, due to the dental background, are also used to working with distances smaller than a millimeter. If they regularly put entire faces back together, why can't OMFS do seemingly minor cosmetic procedures?

every periodontist is an oral plastic surgeon. not sure how many periodontists are out there these days... not enough.

Honey, I want to be a periodontist...we are most certainly NOT "oral plastic surgeons"! We do gingival and bone grafts, and drop implants. Maybe a lip repositioning. And any dentist who gets trained can do Botox and Restylane.

Oral-maxillofacial surgeons do everything we do, plus free flaps, facial feminization surgery, face lifts, nose jobs, etc. THEY are plastic surgeons!

Comparing a gum graft to an osteocutaneous free flap is like comparing building a log cabin to building a skyscraper.

If you want to see cosmetic plastic surgery at its finest, Google facial feminization surgery.

lol. A surgery that requires one to have more money than cents. Who would have thought that made up diseases from the physiological profession would spill into other, more established, medical professions.

Thanks for insulting me. I want FFS so badly.
