I posted in plastics with no answer...

what percentage of gen surg residents take the two year hiatus before applying plastics? I am not so interested in further delaying my life by 2 whole years to get a spot but will if that what it takes, i'm just wondering if it is sort of a mandatory thing or is do people match directly from gen surg? thanks

Why would you take a 2 year hiatus to apply to plastics? I don't know anyone who finished general surgery and then took a "hiatus" unless they didn't match the first year applying (and so ended up doing Breast, Hand or Burns for a year).

Are you talking about spending 2 years in the lab? That IS common especially as PRS has gotten more competitive.

But the vast majority match from general surgery without any time off between end GS and starting PRS.

yes, i meant 2 years in the lab.

I'm relieved to hear its not an unofficial requirement. Do you have any rough idea of how many residents match plastics fellowships without doing the 2 years of research? I am interested in getting a rough idea.

Also, where could I find a list of programs that take gen surg residents for hand fellowships, i know most only take ortho/plastics people

Thank you

I never said it wasn't an unofficial requirement. My comment above was assuming you meant taking two years off after general surgery. You don't take the time off after general surgery, but work in the lab, usually between 2nd and 3rd clinical years.

IMHO, research is practically a requirement for many programs and residents. I was told that to be competitive I needed to spend some time in the lab, this despite nearly 10 years of medical research, grant writing, etc. prior to medical school.

So I would say that the numbers that get in without research are probably small but that is limited to my experience and those of my friends, all of whom spent time in the research lab. However, I am sure there are many out there that didn't. I know several that didn't match and many of them didn't have research - hard to know what the defining factor was.
