Hey Guys,

I'm a little confused on the body structure of the platyhelminths.
According to Kaplan, they have 3 layers of cells.
Which I'm assuming is the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.

But according to DAT Achiever, they are acoelomates, which means they are solid bodied animals w.o any cavity between the digestive track and the outer body wall.

So my question do they only have 2 layers (bc they are acoelomates) or do they have 3 layers or do they start off with 2 then get 3?

Thanks!

Acoelomates- no cavity in the adult form, has nothing to do with their embryology

# of layers comes from their embryology--Triploblastic like you stated

so what hes trying to say is plathyhelminths has a solid ectoderm, and endoderm and mesoderm. meaning there isnt a cavity formed by the mesoderm as seen by normal coelomates like the annelid. in case anyone was confused

Flatworms are protostome acoeloemates, meaning that they have a body cavity directly lined by the endoderm and not the peritoneum-lined, true body cavity observed in the coeloemates. So Platyhelminthes still have a body cavity, just not the coeloem in the true sense.

Okay. So flat worms are acoelomates...

so let me get this straight.
so they DO HAVE A ectoderm, endoderm, AND mesoderm?

yes, wiki flatworms they have a good article on them
