In the interest of doing something besides stalking the mailman and trying to think of anecdotes that make you sound good in interviews, I thought I would suggest something we can do that will take 2-4 mins of your time, and might effect your veterinary experience.

There is currently a farm bill in Congress that includes provisions for expansion of vet school facilities, and programs that include loan forgiveness etc. for large animal/public health vets, lots of good things for us as vet people etc. etc. Unfortunately as far as I can tell, there is a good chance that it is going to be vetoed by the prez, which means it will get kicked back to the senate. This is where you come in.

The link below will give you some info about the bill, and a pdf link to the name and phone number of the person you need to call for your state. You talk to them for a few minutes, you tell them what you want and that is that.

Theoretically, congressmen are supposed to vote the way that their constituents desire, and you as a constituent have the ability to call their office anytime you like and tell them what you want them to do. My dad calls his all the time to complain about our bad roads, old people are a hoot, but that is how the system is supposed to work.

If I am completely wrong about this bill let me know, I know only the USAHA side of it, maybe it is full of pork and shouldn't be passed. Get it, a farm bill full of pork  I kill myself.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled obsessing

Fargeese....you okay over there?? Too much obsessing for you too I see. 👍

I personally am having a hard time deciding what I feel about the new farm bill. I grew up on a farm and am still very active on the family farm, I have seen the previous iterations of the farm bill in action and have been very underwhelmed by what I have seen. There are examples of wasteful spending everywhere and the small farmers that make up the core of farming are largely ignored. The new farm bill seeks to spend even more money on useless programs as well as subsidizing more large farms.
On the other hand as a member of the veterinary community I feel that increased funding for veterinary colleges and other programs is a good thing, but overall I think there is way way to much waste to justify the few good things that would come of this farm bill.

Stated like a true farmer. Concur.

Speaking of the democratic process -- don't forget to vote on the presidental primary. Super Tuesday is coming up, if you're lucky enough to be from one of those states. It's going to be close, so don't be shy to vote!
