Hi all,

I'm a pre-med student who loves playing guitar and recently started taking it seriously. I was wondering if there are other guitar or any other musicians currently in med school and if they are able to find time to play every day. I'd like to be able to practice 1-2 hours a day if possible. Really hope it is as it would be sad to abandon guitar for med school. 🙁

Being a med student doesn't mean your life is over. You'll have time during med school to keep up with your hobbies. Just make sure to put your studies first.

You'll have plenty of time first and fourth year if that is how you want to spend your free time. It may be a little more difficult during certain parts of 2nd year and during some rotations 3rd year.

You just have to make it a priority. If you decide "I want to play my guitar every day," you can make that happen (maybe not every single day, but many days of the week). I play the piano, and I found that I did better in class when I took a little time to just relax and play in the evening... however, because I didn't make it a priority as such, I only play a few times a month. That's not because I don't have time to do it; I just have other activities that I need to/prefer to do with my free time. 🙂

I had played guitar pretty seriously for about 9 years before starting school and my playing time dropped really significantly.

This is true. You really just have to set aside time to do it and stay committed.

I found time with school for my band to play a show for the school and that was probably the time I practiced guitar the most during school and that was kind of rough but still fun. It sounds like you're a little earlier in your playing days than I am, so that makes it a little more exciting and easier to commit time. Usually, the longer you've played the more you're okay with taking time off and can still recover fairly easily.

this is med school. there is no happiness or guitar playing in med school. all fun must cease.🙄

Yes that's the stereotype, and believe it or not a lot of people I've talked to do believe this.

I know I'll have to make some sacrifices, but I still want to have a reasonable amount of time to partake in my hobbies/interests. Since I'm still somewhat of a beginner-intermediate at guitar even putting it down for a couple of days means losing progress, which is why I wanted to know if its possible to allot time EVERY day to a particular hobby or interest. If that's not possible then I don't see myself ever reaching a very high level of playing.

yes honey, you can. if it's that important to you, you'll do it. I know 2 people who have bought guitars during 1st year and decided they were going to learn to play and now we can't get them to leave the dang things at home.

Maybe it'll depend on where you're going to school. I've seen and heard of med students who hate their lives and study 24/7 and are miserable. Then again i go to a school where I can go out nearly every weekend, have plenty of free time and enjoy life 1000x more than I did in undergrad.

hey! we have 3 or 4 guitarists in our class of varying skill levels and whoever's turn it is to throw the party each week, there's always a guitar hanging about for us to assault! also, our school has a music room with full drum kits and amps, keyboards, guitars, basses... we call in and jam sometimes. I'm really not a great player (my little hands mean barre chords always sound a bit off!) but I join in and it's good fun. Don't give up music! Put aside a couple hours at the weekend for 'me time', hit up UltimateGuitar for chords and play some cheesy songs!😎
(or - you could write one about medicine... y'know, mnemomics to music?!)

This. I've kept up with all my hobbies. They're more fun now because they are like rewards for busting my ass studying

I play piano. The closer the exams, the more piano I want to play 😀

To answer your question, yes there is time for hobbies and a bit of life outside the med school.
