I recently acquired an ipod..I like it a lot but I prefer not to use earbuds/headphones. I have had a difficult time finding something to play it on the car/home stereo. I have bought 2 different types of FM transmitting type of devices and had to return both, as they didn't function consistently.

I know you can get speakers that you dock your ipod on for home use, but that doesn't help in the car.

Anybody have a recommendation for playing your ipod in the car that will work consistently?

Thanks!

Get a new stereo that has an auxilary port so you can directly connect your ipod. FM transmitters are your only bet if you can't afford to put a new stereo in. I always recommend to my customers the belkin tunecast II so it can be used in the car or at home or anywhere a radio is located. Or, if you have a cassette deck in your car stereo, the cassette adaptors are the most consistent and in my opinion, best option for iPod use in the car.

I actually use a cassette adapter in the car and a dedicated ipod cradle attached to the my stereo at home. Casette adapters can be variable. I bought two that were advertised as made for ipods. Both of these had horrible sound. Then I bought a Sony adapter that was advertised as made for a portable disc player. That one works great.

You might also be able to get an adapter that plugs into your existing factory stereo. I know at least for recent Toyota's there's one that plugs into the CD changer port on the back of the stereo. These usually run for about $50-100. Pay a little more and you can get a good aftermarket stereo that does much more. As far as cassette adapters, I can also vouch for the Sony model. It works great.

I know you said you'd already tried a couple of FM transmitters, but if you haven't tried this one by Kensington, you might want to. I think it's one of the better ones.

I agree. I usually recommend to use the old Sony discman cassette adapters. At my store we have the Monster adapter and the Griffin adapter. Usually they are returned with complaints of not working (especially in older car stereos) or too much noise that distracts from the music. I didn't know about the adapter that can be used for CD changer ports. I'll have to check that out.

I use the monster tape adapter and it works fine however if the bitrate of the song you are playing is less then 192 the song will sound like crap.
