Hi All!!

I'll be applying in June and I need to start putting together a school list so that I know how much money I am going to need to start putting aside for the whole application process. My stats and activities are below. Note that I do not take the MCAT until June, but I took the sample test at the end of January and my percentage corresponded to about a 510 overall (had only done biology and biochemistry review at that point), so I am confident that I can score higher. But anyways, please HELP, your input will actually help me out a lot.

Demographics:
-Male
-Oregon Resident
-African-American
-First-generation college student

Academic Info:
cGPA: 3.75
sGPA: The same or higher
School: BYU
Assuming +510 on MCAT. Will not apply otherwise.

- 2 years research at my undergrad
- 1 summer at the Massachusetts General Hospital (preparing manuscript now)
- 2 summers at the NIH (National Institute on Aging)
- Will likely be doing post-abc IRTA at NIH in same lab that I was in before (though I acknowledge that I won't be able to put this on my app)

Work:
- 1 year 7th grade math assistant at a local private middle school
- 2 years molecular biology teaching assistant
- 1 year Medical Assistant at an urgent care clinic

Service:
- 250 hours in CCU at local hospital
- Molecular biology/chemistry tutor at my university (20-30 hours?)
- 50 hours hospice for homeless individuals

ECs + leadership:
- 1 year Life Sciences Student Council Member at my ug
- Started a small journal club with my lab mate when I was at mass gen. that other summer students participated in
-Pre-med club

Shadowing:
Primary Care - 100 hours
Anesthesiology - 20 hours
Oncology - 10 hours
Cardiac surgery - 30 hours
Hepatobiliary and general surgery - 6 hours

Posters:
- My UG science symposium x 2 years

LORS:
- GLOWING rec. from my PI at Harvard/Mass. Gen from the summer
- great letter from PI at NIH
- great letter from a professor from one of my honors humanities courses
- Letter from my O-chem professor (received A's)
- Letter from my biochemistry professor (received an A - top 10% of the class)
- Letter from my PI at my UG

Hobbies:
Running (recreational) + bball (rec.) (should I even put this on my app? LOL)
Speak Korean

African American male with a 3.75 and a high MCAT.... apply anywhere you want 🙂

It's really hard to tell you specifically where you should apply without an MCAT score. A 510, 515, and 520 would give you completely different lists.

OKAY. assume 510.

Use Wedgedawg's spreadsheet, add your state school.

Any school you want. Seriously. I suggest starting with your state school and the HBCs.

Thanks Goro. I would like to attend a research institution, but I don't want my list to be too top-heavy!

Really??? Too top-heavy?

Throw in some mid tier schools in locations you like too if you want to increase your chances for scholarships

Bumping. How is my list? I feel like I need more mid-tiers....

Harvard University

Stanford University

University of Pennsylvania

UCSF

In all likelihood, you can write your own ticket if you do well on the MCAT (no section < 125, at least one section at 129 or better) so you should buy the MSAR and look carefully at schools' locations, mission and requirements for graduation (do you want a school tht requires a thesis, for example?) Do you like urban, suburban or rural location? How far are you willing to travel (consider hours from family by whatever the most logical form of transportation is... not every city is easy to get to and if you have several connections traveling half way across the country can be longer than traveling non-stop coast to coast. Know what you want and then set your list using the MSAR.

Give me an MCAT score and then I can help. But start list with ORHS and the HBCs.
