I am an IMG. I completed the college in 04. Came to US in 06 end. Applied to IM but failed. After going through lot of forums I started thinking about the FM more seriously. And now I am interested in FM more than IM. Back in my country we don`t have FM as a speciality, so I was not knowing about it at all.
Now that I have decided to go for FM seriously please guide me. My credentials are 84/82 step 1/2 first try, CS pass first try. I have one year experience under a american physician and will get a strong LOR.
I know that nothing is guaranteed but are these credentials competitive or not for FM and do I stand chance for FM.
Thank You

If you mean medical school when you said college, you will be very close to the 5 years out of school magic number. Your scores are good enough for FP. I don't know your visa status either but you should definitely go all out applying to FP programs all over the place this year. Some programs will not even look at you after 5 years. Also try to get a recommendation from an FP doctor. Good luck.

Thank You for advice. I did mean medical school. I know some of the programs are too stringent for the year of graduation. I don`t need visa as I am a permanent resident. I am also trying to get experience under a Family practitioner. Anything else you think I should try. I also wanted to ask whats exactly means rural track. Is it like after completing it we have to stay there. Is it tough to enter into one.
Thank You

Rural track just means they will gear your education to working outside of the big urban (city) areas. You are never obligated to stay and work in the same location where you complete your residency. Only thing I added to my resume was passing step3 and a few months of research, but I don't think you need to do all this. Good luck.

Hello Rossdoc,
I was just going through the different forums in the website and other sites and I am getting the picture that the FM is getting more competitive. Does this mean that people have low to mid 80 scores should stop thinking of residency in US. I am really interested in FM but I think its getting out of my league. Also are doing rural track currently.
Thank You

Your scores are just fine for the moment. I think that family medicine is getting more competitive but its still a fairly easy field to get into. I really think you should go all out this year as far as applications and get yourself in. You will be fine.
