I am a UCLA bio grad with research experience, have a lot of volunteer activities, and have been working/volunteering in dental offices for 3+ years. I recently worked as a dental assistant and have an xray license (which I don't know if that would help my chances).

I know that is late in the cycle, but I am sort of on the fence about applying due to my stats. Honestly, my mom was sick throughout my undergrad years at college (and a bunch of other drama, but I won't get into that) and it was hard to fully concentrate on academics. Frankly, I messed up in a few classes, which killed my GPA (I never failed or anything but did get some C/C+). My GPA is about a 3.0-3.1 and I took the DAT last year and got :

19 AA
20 RC
17 PAT
20 Chem
18 QR
20 BIO

Is there no hope? Should I apply? What are my chances? Where should I apply (to increase the likelihood of getting in and to save on money on long shots)? I am asian, so I know schools like Howard mostly accept minorities, so I think that would be a good start. I'm just really confused right now and I have been calling schools and researching as much as I can on entering class stats. However, I would appreciate all the feedback. Thanks🙂

I would highly recommend that you apply early next year.

I would suggest applying next year as well. Even if you apply to AADSAS right at the moment, your app pbb wont get to schools until mid-late October if you are lucky.

Although your DAT score is solid, your GPA is on the lower end of the spectrum. Try to raise it as much as you can during the year, apply early next cycle and I am sure you should be good.

If you decide on applying for the current year, you'll probably stand a better chance at schools that continue interviewing deep into the admissions cycle like NYU. Statwise, our numbers are comparable, so I know how unsettling a position it can be.

In your personal statement, be sure to address your shortcomings head on. (Probably the best piece of advice an adcom member gave me.) Your life experience and maturity will be one of the great positives you can place on your application. I wouldn't consider myself the most traditional applicant out there (click my predents profile to see what I mean), so don't hesitate to think about a post-bacc program or a masters program to bolster your academic credentials if this year doesn't pan out.
