Hi everyone. Today, I received two calls from admissions offices informing me that I have been accepted into two more colleges of the ones I was waitlisted at. I have already made a deposit to a different college, but what happened today changes everything!

I now have three options to consider.
Here is some information about the three schools:

1. Rutgers University - New Brunswick
  • Honors Program
  • Intended Major: Psychology (and of course I will be on the pre-med track).
  • $5,000 scholarship
  • OOS tuition 🙁
  • *Total cost estimate: between $35,000 and $40,000
2. UMass Amherst
  • Did not apply to the Honors College but probably attend my Sophomore year
  • Intended Major: Unsure but probably Psychology as well (and of course the pre-med track).
  • No scholarship so far (they will send me a financial aid package in the mail soon).
  • In-state tuition 😀
  • *Total cost estimate: between $20,000 and $25,000
3. University of Michigan
  • Not accepted into the Honors College
  • Intended Major: Also unsure
  • No scholarship (who knows what might come in the mail!)
  • OOS tuition 🙁
  • Much higher ranked than UMass/Rutgers
  • *Total cost estimate: between $55,000 and $60,000 🙁
* The total cost estimates DO NOT include my financial aid package.

I have only visited Rutgers (NB) and plan on visiting UMass soon.

Michigan would be a good choice if you're going into something like engineering but for Psych/undecided it's definitely not worth the money.

I would say be careful with a psych major because the degree is not very useful except for getting you into graduate/professional school.

I plan on pursuing a psychology major because it comes easily to me and I really enjoy it! I am really determined to go to medical school, so I should take something I enjoy rather than focusing on the usefulness of a subject (although back-up plans are essential). I will only be a freshman next year so I don't necessarily have to consider my major yet – I plan on taking many of the prerequisite courses for the first two years. I will likely declare my major during Junior year.

I would still like other peoples' insight on which school I should attend 🙂 Any advice is helpful!

Sure, that's a valid reason. Just wanted to make sure you are aware. Unfortunately I can't give any advice on UMass vs Rutgers. If I was undecided I would choose the cheaper option.

Yeah... probably. 40K - 60K more $ to attend Rutgers probably isn't worth it considering they are very similar academically. Like Rutgers, I can always apply to the Commonwealth UMass Honors Program, which is more competitive than Rutgers' Honors College.
