Hi. I am in the process of buying books and I need your help and experience. For the following subjects, I need a good book that is comprehensive and thorough (textbook or review book does not matter as long as it is an understandable and comprehensive book):

Endocrine physiology
Neurosicince
GI system, esp. physiology
Immunology
Microbiology
Hematology/Oncology (combination or separate)
OB/GYN
Histology (esp. pathological histology)

Is there any other ?must have? book for any medical school subject that will greatly enhance understanding.

Honestly, if I were you I would save your money and NOT buy the big comprehensive textbooks for these disciplines. Hopefully, your school will provide you with a MDConsult account. If so, they have dozens of online books (including Cecil's, Nelson's, and many more). Your library will probably also give you access to Harrison's online and maybe even Ovid. Combined, I probably have access to over 35 online textbooks.

Personally, I find it MUCH easier to print out chapters at a time and carry those arround rather than carry around the monster sized textbooks.

So instead of buying large comprehensive textbooks, buy a bunch of smaller, review books. As far as the review books go, look at the different ones available and choose the format you like the best (outline vs. mnemonics vs. standard textbook format, etc.). Most review books have the same information, they just present the information differently. So if you choose the format you prefer, you be more likely to enjoy reading the text and will hopefully retain more.

Based on the list of subjects you want books in, it sounds like you are a first or second yr med student. Other then some of the board review books, there is no such thing as an essential text book. That being said, here are some books that I would recommend:

Micro: Medical micro made ridiculously simple
Pathologic histo: Robbins Pathologic diseases
BRS Physio: for your physio questions
BRS Path: for your path

The rest of the subjects that you requested books in don't need books (unless your lecturer requires and tests you from them)

If you are not a med student, which I suspect that you aren't, don't waste your time purchasing any books unless your class requires it. If your class requires it, be sure to return/sell back the book after the class is over because you won't need it in med school.
