I know it sucks, but I would honestly just swallow the pain of shelling out money for a flight and go to the interview. If you're unsure what you want to do there isn't any better way of doing re-con than seeing what the program is like in person.

Going to the interview is the best way to see how what it's like being a PhD student and should help you figure out whether it's the track you want to take. And you're not actually making a commitment by interviewing. Interviews are for you as much as they are for the program. You can always turn them down if it's not the right match.

I got an invitation to an interview for a PhD program. I would be competing against three other people for a spot.

The thing is, it's 11 hours away from me, so the trip would be very expensive. Also, I'm not 100% sure I want to go. The past few months I've been thinking I might be happier with just a Masters. What should I do??

I don't want to turn it down and regret it forever... but I don't want to make a commitment I'm not ready to make.

I agree 100% with the other two posters. You may also look back in 5 years and ask yourself "Why the heck didn't I just go to that interview?"

On the flip side of the issue, it's really important when deciding to pursue a doctoral degree that you are 110% committed to the task. It's a lot of work... and that's an understatement. Depending on the program, it can also be a lot of money. It may also be a good idea to give yourself a year or two in the field to figure out if your really happy with just the master's or if you really feel the urge to further your education.

But I say go to the interview, you'll be happier in the end that you did. 🙂
