Could anyone of you please tell me how osteopathic medicine can help the rural areas?

Is that a question on one of the secondary application?

Which schools ask you that?

No, this question isn't from a secondary. It's a question that was placed on the interview feedback that i dont know how to answer

Many osteopathic physicians (not all!) enter into primary care. Rural areas represent an underserved community that need physicians in primary care. Therefore, osteopathic physicians can help to fill the void in rural area medicine and alleviate shortages in those areas.

This was just my quick stab at the question... I am sure it would be impressive if you could give an example of an underserved rural area... and maybe stress your commitment to helping those in need.

if you want to talk OMM specifically... rural areas = often lower income = less money for expensive drugs (poor insurance coverage) = sometimes some OMM will help so the patients don't have to spend the money on drugs

just my idea...

I was told this once by an FP that decided to turn down all of the MD schools to go to an DO school...

She told me that she chose to go to a DO school because she was going to serve a rural area. This meant that resources are limited and this included physical medicine and rehabilitation.

By training as a DO, she would be able to offer her patients more treatment options than an MD, namely OMT. Because osteopathic medicine, trains us to do manipulation and emphasis is put in prevention... a DO would be more likely to treat not only medical diseases but also musculoskeletal problems. You can treat the patient with manipulation and show them some rehabilitation stretches and strength training with muscle energy till they can get themselves to a near by rehab center or till they can afford further rehab treatment.

I know I'm getting a bit winded here but the point is as a DO you have something more to offer than simply writing a script.

Just another perspective 😎
