Aright so this is the second time around for me applying and again I have gotten any acceptances. Im steadfast in getting into dental school, but I guess I didnt realize this when I was doing my undergrad. I ended up with a 2.89 BS in Biology with my sGPA being a 2.7. I am currently taking a one year grad program at NYU dental school in Clinical Research with a 4.0. I got a 21 AA 22 TS and 23 PAT. I have over 200 hours as a dental assistant and am currently working as a dental technician 20 hours a week, with about 150 hours under my belt. I applied rather late, (Sept), which I realized was definetly going against me. What would yall recommend me to do to boost my chances of getting in for the 09 year? Do you think I should retake my DAT, take some undergrad courses in sciences, another grad program? I just want to get in.

Is you grad program a masters program? If it is and you have a 4.0, with your bomb DAT scores you're set man. Just apply by June and you'll have that acceptance.

well as of now I am not in the masters program, just the one year certificate program. I am gonna attempt to switch over to continue through till next year, but not sure if I will be able to. Any other options?

i think washingtonDAT was onto something. You need to trump your undergrad GPA with a killer masters GPA. Your DAT is more than good enough for Dental school. I suggest that you use this next year to finish a masters(if possible) and then apply agqain. With enough determination you will get in. Also tons of interaction with the admissions of schools you really want to attend helps tremendously.👍

so are you guys saying that I shouldnt apply for the 09 cycle but rather try to get into the masters program, complete it and apply for the '10 cycle. I just don't want to wait that long, so I was wondering if there were any courses I could take in the summer to boost my gpa?

No. What I was saying is apply for '09 but while you are waiting for the '08-'09 try to get or finish your masters (if possible). Summer courses and your 1 year certificate program will really help with your application GPA. They will also show that you have really gotten your act together.

Yeah, I am going to try to push for the masters program. My program director loves and sees how committed I am. However, if I was to take courses during the summer, what would you suggest? Undergrad courses at a 4 year university like NYU? Retake some of the sciences that I got low grades on in my undergrad?

can you take courses that will help you complete your masters over the summer? if you can do that it will be the best thing to do. If not, then a redo of really low grades in science courses is a really good idea.

thanks for the input. any other opinions or suggestions?

I would finish your masters program during the 2008-2009 school year and apply for dental school at the same time. I think with your 4.0 your first year of grad school, your very satisfactory DAT scores, and the fact you'll be finishing your masters will put you well over the top. You'll be fine, just apply eary and keep you GPA up. Best man!

do you think I should take some summer courses as well in classes that I did poorly in?( sciences courses only of course) or take different upper level science courses I have not taken? I would be taking these courses at another school different from where I graduated my undergrad from.

Keep in mind that dat scores are, in most cases, only good for 2 yrs. So try and apply before they expire and you have to retake.
