PM&R Procedures?

Which pain procedures can physiatrists(without fellowships) perform. I know many of them in my area use nerve blocks/facet blocks alot. Is the answer simply, whatever they are comfortable doing, or are there generally more black and white limitations. Thanks

I know a PM&R doc with no fellowship who does caudal epidurals, foraminal epidurals, facet injections (cervical and lumbar) and rhizotomies.

It varies - but I have seen physiatrists without fellowship training perform lumbosacral injections (ESIs, facets, caudals, etc.), peripheral joing injections (shoulder, hip, knee, etc.), EMGs, SI joint injections, trigger point injections, carpal tunnel injections, etc.

It depends on the job you get. (usually more of a political issue than competency) There are some jobs out there that will actually "train" you to do basic procedures. Most seem to agree that cervicals and other higher risk procedures should be deferred to those w fellowship training. Disk procedures, pumps, stims, etc are probably advanced skills gained best in fellowship.

What's ironic is that lumbar transforaminals on certain patient's can be harder than disc procedures and definitely harder than RF facet rhizotomy.

yeah - I agree - but I think the perception is there.

Has anyone heard of radiologists going and doing a year of interventional spine fellowship? Is that allowed by PASSOR? Can Rads take Passor courses to learn those injections?
