PMR Residency Matriculants?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been researching the residencies of medical programs and have come across that there are more PMR matriculants in PGY2 then in PGY1. Why is there a change from year one?
There are advanced and categorical positions....

To put it simply, some programs have an integrated intern year, others don't. A lot of specialties do this. Don't worry about this stuff right now as a premed (the specific programs). It's good to have an idea about what residency is though. I feel like there's a FAQ somewhere that can probably explain. Do some more research.

It's bc PM&R programs have you do an internship year. Most are combined together (categorical) and others are separated (advanced) from the intern year. You're a premed - concentrate on getting into med school first.

Why not have only categorical spots in the match? If someone got an intern spot, you don't even know what might happen to you the following year... Does one have to reapply thru the match? I hope psych and FM don't have an intern year...

Categorical spots combine the intern year with the advanced position. That's the only difference. You apply for categorical, or (advanced and an intern year) during your MS-4 and match for them both at the same time, no need to apply during your intern year.

So why would someone apply for ONLY intern year then?...

Ok, let me explain it easier. If you're applying for PM&R, you applying during your MS-4 year for categorical AND advanced positions AND internship years (to go along with the advanced position. If you match into categorical then obviously the intern year is taken care of for you. If you match into a advanced position, you'll need to have matched into an intern year also.

No one usually applies for JUST an internship at the beginning of match season.

I was asking about that because I remember seeing somewhere is SDN that people that trouble to match do a preliminary year sometimes in general surgery and try to get a categorical spot the following year...

Yes at the end of the match, they've only matched into an internship only. So then they apply during their intern year again for an advanced position, or they could apply for categorical and have to redo their intern year.

General Surgery is also a categorical residency, not an advanced position like Derm, Rads, Ophtho, Anes, PM&R, etc.
