What's the best pocket guide for internal medicine an rotation? Please don't say you don't need one. I'm looking at either a pocket Cecil's or Harrison's. I'm looking for an actual book, not a PDA source. I've already purchased Pocket Medicine by Sabatine but want something more authoritative and comprehensive but portable. If anyone can drop an ISBN number too, that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

I would add MGH's pocket medicine to the list.

Thanks, I have that one but I'm wondering about authoritative references (ones that attendings would appreciate).

every medicine attending made a comment that I had Ferri's Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient. you wanted the updated 6th edition since that's thinner. but definitely loved by attendings and very helpful to keep in your pocket.

What does bigfrank, Jalby, Long Dong, TheCat, Cpt.Hook Hamate, OneStrongBro, omar, and some of the other regulars consult on the medicine floor?

Ferris is by far the best one i found IMO. I found wash manual terrible to use-It is not thorough enough to explain things. It doesnt give you a ddx, doesnt really give a clear work up. I dont know I wasnt a fan of wash man. Harrisons pocket was awful as well. I love harrisons text but the handbook is too vague and does not give you how to workup a disease at all. Bottom line Ferris has it all. So its a bit thicker-your not really going to notice an extra .25 of a pound in your pocket and it reads like a small text but at the same time gives you a good ddx, good steps to workup and treat. Very good. I have no experience with cecils-but i hate cecils essentials and i hate cecils big text so im guessing i wouldnt like the handbook. My opinion go with ferris

What's the ISBN or could you provide a link to Amazon?

I'm pretty sure he means Ferri (not "Ferris").

I'm not one of the ones that you want to hear from but I will repeat that you really want to get the updated 6th edition not the amazon 6th edition. as far as I know amazon does not have the updated edition but I could be mistaken on that.

Your opinion counts too. I was just name dropping. It's always fun to get Jalby in here on occasion.

I've never even seen these other books. I used the blue Pocket Medicine, a Sanford guide, ePocrates, and UptoDate, and that was sufficient to handle anything I needed to look up.

I liked the oxford guide. It seemd to cover almost everything I needed and was very concose and well written. Harrisons pocket guide was a waste of money.

I'll put in a plug for the MGH Pocket Medicine (the little blue 3-ring). This little baby is pretty powerful despite being so compact. It fits into a coat pocket nicely. The print is small and the pages are dense. If you can get past that, it's a great book.

I also had 5-Minute CC and Harrisons both on PDA. I didn't find either to be very helpful.

I've heard that Ferri's binding is horrible (spiral bound and otherwise). Are you guys saying Cecil's and Harrison's are a bust or do you have no experience with them?

I like the MGH Pocket Medicine Book. It's compact, but very useful.

Yep, that book is well-recommended by my classmates, although, I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to these things...the Tarrascon Internal Medicine and Critical Care book (about twice the thickness of the regular Tarrascon pharm book) is awesome, but be advised, it is very lean and meant to be a quick reference to DDx's that you already came up with, but it has some very handy algorithms and score calculations (TIMI, PORT, etc...) that are hard to find elsewhere. I also used the palm version of the Washington Manual to prepare for the inevitable pathophysiology pimping when presenting patients. Good luck in your search.

I don't exist anymore

This is true about Ferri's binding. But it is a terrific resource on the floors.
