I was chatting to a friend of mine yesterday who is a podiatrist, and over here in Australia we have podiatrict surgeons who operate on the foot/ankle area. It's a couple of years extra specialisation after the 4yr undergrad, but the option exists here. Just wondering if it was the same over in the US?

yes its basicaly the same here
we have to do a residency to be licensed to practice (typically 2-3)
the only difference is that there are certain states which limit a podiatrists right to practice on or above the ankle...
however after a surgical residency, all podiatrists are authorized to practice surgery on the foot.. its above the ankle that is more of an issue

There's no real residency in Australia unless you specialise I guess. If you do want to do surgery then you do a post-grad course.As soon as you complete your degree, you can register to practice here.

I'm just interested in how health systems different parts of the world work. In Aus we don't have physician assistants, and we are only just getting nurse practitioners (mainly in rural/remote areas where docs won't work).

Actually, it takes 4 yrs undergrad then 4 yrs of Podiatry school then residency. If I'm not mistaken I think the U.S. and soon to be Canada are the only countries that offer a doctorate level degree.
