In the article, he says, " — it’s a field where one is able to wear many hats (i.e. surgeon, dermatologist, oncologist, etc.). " Are DPM's actually dermatologists/ oncologists ect. Does anyone know the extent that DPMs actually treat when it comes to other areas such as these?

I think he's being "figurative". DPM are not licensed to be oncologist/derm/etc, but have the required adequate training to "wear the hat". there's a lot involved with being a DPM. We talk a lot about the surgery aspect of DPM's, but there's a lot more like being able to identify suspicious lesions on the skin (derm), on radiographs or obtaining a biopsy and sending a request to path (oncol). However, most of the time, these patients are referred out much like when a primary care physician notices something suspicious and refers to another specialist. There are fellowships after residencies for DPMs, but not exclusively for DPMs, especially popular in Limb Salvage and Wound Care, that are more "derm/vascular/endocrine" focused, but there are still others that focus on "surgical reconstruction".

Mostly in these forums we talk about DPM's being surgeons, however, not the "general surgeons" you see on Gray's Anatomy (we get more action 😉, jk). We are usually located either in the Department of Surgery or Orthopaedics. Some can be found in the Department of Endocrinology (UChicago) or even in a separate Department of Podiatry.

There's more info, but I gotta get back to my paper. hope this helps.

if you ever have questions, feel free to shoot me a line or click on the facebook link on the bottom. There are several "officers" that are fellow residents/physicians that can answer your questions in case I can't.

These guys are mostly my friends all over the country like Portland, Fairfax, DC, Chicago (lots of chicago), NJ, Youngstown, Colorado, Pittsburgh, etc
