hello i have a question about podiatry residencies. I have applied to podiatry school but haven heard anything. i was doing research and there are two types of residencies you can do after podiatry school. one is the medicine track and the other is a surgery track. What is the difference??? and why are some residencies 24 months and some are 36???. are the 24 mnths one only medicine and no surgeries?. how hard is it to get a podiatry surgery residency???. and is there anything as a BAD podiatry residency program???.
please someone answer my questions. i have also applied to carribean med schools n have been accepted in sept 08 semester but IF i get in pod school i am gonna have a tough decision to make cuz going to pod i will be a us grad.
i know that if i decide to go in pod i wanna do a sur residency will i be able to get one by the time i get out of school???. please anyone help me by answering my questions. and also what about the pay?. i don wanna work hard for 4-5 yrs and only make 50-60 grand. thanks in advance.

i cant believe im doing this right now. its like 1:23 am in washington dc, and i have to be in downtown at 8am. im gonna go ahead and attempt to answer ur questions in good faith and because i am bored.

first of all,
u should research some of the past threads to the answers ur looking for, since they have been talked about thoroughly and u may find additional information apart from the info i provide.

secondly--
the residency programs.
the 2 yr program is still a surgical residency, but u can only do surgery on the front of the foot or forefoot surgical residency.
a 3 yr residency is a forefoot and rear foot and/or ankle surgery residency. ie: u can do surgery on the front AND back of the foot.
that is the difference, the move in the profession nowadays is to have some sort of leveling, and shift towards making all residencies 3 yr PM&S.

BOTH ways BOTH residencies, podiatrists make an adequate if not more than adequate income. i have shadowed PMS 3yr, and PMS 2yr pods, and both are doing alright, but dont take my word for it>>

Forbes ranked podiatry as number 15 in pay, and personally, i think the average salary for all the reported medical fields in forbes survey are highly under reported. i do not think the avg salary for an anesthesiologist is: Mean Annual Wage: $184,340. its higher than that on salary.com, and much higher in real (according to ppl i know).

if ur a good student, u wont have trouble landing a good residency. thats typically how it goes. but residencies are residencies, and they are accredited for a reason, some of them have different focuses (some are more surgical, some are more conservative care, some are more wound care, but all of them do provide that mesh of what u need to be a practicing podiatrist. thats just my understanding of it and i hope it helps.

"I was like you once, confused and lost without a path, but then i found what i was looking for all along, and it was the foot." - a podiatrist i know, or just happened to make up....more likely made up. 👍
