I'm not sure I understand how the 3rd and 4th year works in podiatry school. After 2 years you get to start at a hospital correct? Do you get to pick where you want to go? Does it rotate monthly or do you stay at this new location for the next two years? Thanks.

The curriculum is very dependent on the school you attend. I can speak for CPMS (DMU).

3rd Year
-Class work in the areas of trauma, dermatology, community health, basic surgical skills, and PBLs
-Rotations are with various faculty members and included the Tower clinic, Methodist wound care center, Broadlawn's medical center (you will get a internal med rotation here as well as podiatry), Greenfield hospital (rural), Pella hospital (rural), and the VA. You will also scrub surgical cases w/ what the faculty member you are rotating with. The whole time you will be in Des Moines.

4th year
-The 4th year is completely up to the student. We have 3 cores (4 months each). You must spend 1 core at a residency program and you must do 1 private practice rotation w/ whomever you choose. The other 7 months are up to you; you have 1 vacation month if you want it. But you have no obligation to the school or an affiliate hospital therefore you can do you rotations anywhere you want.

Ok, so obviously podiatry school isn't highschool or undergrad, but is there a way to get around without a car in Des Moines. Is there public transportation or carpooling to these rural hospitals ?

A lot of students at DMU live right across the street.

And when you go to the rural hospitals, the faculty member drives a school van. As for the VA and Broadlawn's, I'm sure you could hitch a ride w/o a problem.
