My current cum GPA is below a 2.5, due to poor study habits, procrastination, and cramming. I changed majors recently for reasons not related to gpa, but for a Plan B just in case type of thing, liking it more. It still fulfills my prerequisites and then some. I have ton of courses left, 32 classes, that add up to a lot of credit hours, with a lot of science courses like micro, human a& P, orgo, physics, biochem, etc mostly upper level division courses. I have about two years left till graduation. I plan to take courses through the summer along with regular semesters which adds up to 6 semesters. Because this semester I unfortunately had to sit out for financial reasons. Is it possible to bring my GPA up to a 3.5-3.6, if all As are received in my remaining courses? or not a chance? :bag:

Might want to figure out how to calculate GPAs if you want to do well in those upper level science courses. In all seriousness though, what year are you? 6 semesters to a 3.5 doesnt seem feasible with a 2.5. I am currently at a 3.4 and getting to a 3.6 seems like heckuva challenge.

Okay, well if it is only a year of bad classes then you could bring it up to a 3.5-3.6 if you stay above a 3.85 or so each semester, however, if you have more than that, then you will probably have to get a 4.0 with more than just those 32 classes to get up to that. If you really want to go to med school I would consider trying to get into a special masters program and getting really good grades there. Also your college or university probably has a goal gpa calculator somewhere online.

Yes. I was thinking of going this route. Because its right at two years, stemming from a really poor freshman GPA thats hurting me now still. Well is it possible to get atleast a 3.0-3.3 cum? t akemcat and then do smp, then med school. This is my option two. Since my remaining credit hours amount wont really really help me I suppose.

Yes my advisor showed me but I completely forgot how to exactly. Well this would have been my third year, so a junior, but because of my low gpa and dropping two classes to help my cumulative GPA, i lost hours so im classified as a sophomore

Calculate it out on a excel sheet what your max GPA will be if you made A's in all courses for the next 32 classes.

Then subtract a little bit from that GPA. The truth is that making 4.0 semesters or 3.85-3.9+ semester GPAs will require you to change your entire life and the way you study and prepare for exams and so much. Even if you do that, unexpected circumstances will happen that will most likely prevent you from scoring perfect 4.0's often.

Study hard, put your phone away, stop procrastinating, stop cramming, put your phone away, and get that high GPA trend.

If you are very diligent you could realistically end up with a 3.3 or just a smidgen higher, but I wouldn't expect anything more.

Thanks! I needed that motivation. I plan to turn my study habits around along with everything else because I know im capable of better. Again thank you for that slight reality check

Okay thanks for your honesty, I'll aim for atleast a 3.3, thanks for your help!

Yes it is very possible for you to repair your GPA. However, words are easy, doing is hard.

You should have just busted your ass in the beginning! Anyway, it's a challenge to do that from what I've read. You can do it if you put yourself to it.

Yeah, but it was so much going on my freshman year, but I do blame myself.

You can do it.

It's a bit early to plan on an SMP. For now, focus on your classes. Depending on how far into your UG education, you may be able to raise it to a competitive level. If you have completed 16 credits (1 year) with a 2.5 gpa, after 3 years of a 4.0 gpa you could raise it to a 3.6. If you have completed 32 credits (2 years), after 2 more years of 4.0 gpa you can raise it to a 3.25. Again, this is dependent on how many classes you have left to take but GPA is arithmetic, pure and simple. Use a spread sheet and calculate your GPA.

However, at this point, you should also be aware of osteopathic schools and their policy of grade replacement. If you retake a class, an osteopathic school will accept the higher of two grades and leave out the old one. At allopathic schools, they average the two, mitigating the impact retakes can have on your GPA. Think about how this factors into you medical school/becoming a doctor plan and consider retaking all F/D/C-/C classes to increase your GPA.

Remember, half of medical school applicants do not matriculate to either an allopathic or osteopathic school. Respect your competition.

Well I have like 101 hours left to take because I switched majors late. I have roughly 40 something hours as of now I believe right under a 2.5 but above a 2.0. So If I retake C courses and receive an A it will average to a B correct?. But yes I definitely am focusing on my courses for the rest of my undegrad. when you say two years do you mean the regular 4 semester or the summer semesters as well?

if you need to look into a postbac program
Okay, so a SMP, Post-bacc, and Masters are different. Well, I was going to finish my undergrad degree with the highest GPA I possibly can. Then do a Masters that has medical school courses, I dont think it is Classified as an official SMP, but I know that it is intended for gpa enhancement to apply to professional schools. It is here at MUSC here in my home state of SC. and MUSC also happens to be my first choice, along with the other state schools here in SC. along with other med schools.

For MD schools, retake a C and earn an A will average to a B. For DO schools, retake a C and earn an A, grade will become an A (except in Texas). For DO schools, you need to get your GPA in-between a 3.3 and a 3.6 for best results. For MD schools, you need around a 3.6.
