I mailed in my deposit (from nyc to umdnj) on Friday....
I called today (monday) but they have not received it and because of New Years, the postal service is closed and umdnj isn't opened.

I'm scared the check might not get there by Jan 3rd....

I can get to umdnj physically....should I just do that and give in another check on Jan3rd if it happens and tell them to void my 1st one? (are they even allowed to cash both checks?)

I think you should be fine, just check in with them tomorrow afternoon. If they did not get it then tell them you will be there in person on the 3rd.
