The State of Michigan's new fiscal year starts Monday, and the bitterly-divided legislature has yet to prepare a budget. It is possible there will be a partial shut down of the State government on Monday. While State universities, like University of Michigan, have substantial independence, no one really knows what impact such a shut down would have on State universities, especially if the shut down drags on. Governor Granholm will post a contingency plan on her web site tomorrow, at http://www.michigan.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168--176793--,00.html . If you have interviews scheduled with University of Michigan or other State universities (such as Wayne State and Michigan State) you may want to keep up with developments.

The State's FAQs on the potential shut down provides:

2. Will state universities or community colleges close?

State universities and community colleges are not required to close during a government shutdown. If the shutdown continues for more than 21 days, state aid payments to higher education institutions will be delayed. This delay may force some community colleges or universities to limit or cancel classes or activities. Those decisions will be made and communicated by the individual schools.
