Hi there everyone!

This is my first post, and the first time I am applying to medical school. I am applying to both DO and MD programs, but I would prefer the DO route due to my interest in Primary Care. Anyway, I have been reading through what I should include in secondaries, and I guess I just wanted to ask people what they thought would be too much to include in a secondary application. I am the first person in my family to attend college, and both of my parents are apart of the opioid crisis. My family is in a lower socioeconomic class, and because of that, I have been working since I was 16 and full time in college. I have been out of college for the past few years saving up to apply, and now that I am applying I am not sure what would be TMI. It's tough for me to open up about these subjects in general so trying to narrow it down to less than 2000 characters is difficult. Plus I don't want anyone to feel overwhelmed while reading my application that they have to put it down.

Basically, the questions I have are:
1. Should I not include any of this and focus on other difficulties I have struggled with such as group projects, roommate issues, etc.? Like are these things DO schools even want to hear about?
2. Should I mention anything about being the first person in my family to go to college? Or possibly just one aspect of what I mentioned with above? I know that on the ACCOMAS application they do ask that question so is it worth repeating?

Besides what was mentioned above, I have a 3.6 GPA with an MCAT score of 506. Thank you all for any input you have, and I appreciate you taking the time to read this! Good luck to everyone applying 🙂

Edit: My apologies. I did accidentally post this in the MD thread at first.

As more school switch to a competency based curriculum, which involves team efforts, mentioning troubles with group projects would be problematic.
Being first to go to college is always good. We like come from behind stories.

Don't bring #1 in your app or during your interview. Hope you did not add this into your personal statement. If you did you need to be ready how did you overcome with it. Put more focus on #2.
You can mention how did you overcome with those issues e.g to work since you were 16 to support yourself and your family and at the same time going to school full time.
