The University of Chicago Pritzker does not have an md/mph program. So I was wondering is it possible to maybe take MPH classes at a nearby school? In my case it would probably be at UIC or Northwestern. Does anyone have such experience? How does it work?

Thanks

Logistics probably depend on your school. But, we have an MPH program and yet I know two different students who took a year off (one between m1 & m2, the other between M2 & M3) to get an MPH (one at GW, and the other at UMich). They did the degrees elsewhere for non-academic reasons. But, to answer your question - it should be possible as long as your school does not mind you taking a leave. And, if you have options in Chicago, all the better 🙂

One guy did his MPH at UIC, he rejoined my class (MS06)
The other three I know all did theirs at Harvard. We basically have a 'funnel' to Harvard for the MPH. Call the admissions ofice to find out more info on it. I considered this whenI first applied then learned about Preventive medicine.

Through Preventive medicine (intern+ 2yr residency) you essentially get paid to do an MPH for 1 yr and do a 'practicum' year where you come with a research project and rotate through various public health offices. It varies whether you do it through Hopkins or a university setting, CDC or the military in terms of what you will be exposed to. I'm applying for Pediatrics residency and then plan to do 2yr Preventive medicine in leiu of a fellowship. Feel free to hit me up for questions on this!
