So I’ve had an upward trend with science classes but for gen chem 1 I received a C I failed Calculus 1 and I’ve received a B+ for both gen bio 1+2. All other bio courses such as genetics and cell bio I’ve had an A in and both orgo 1+2 as well as physics 1+2. Is it too much of a reach to try and go to dental school. Also would admissions pay mind to someone who grew up as an immigrant/ DACA status holder and coming from a poor family/ neighborhood.

I had a C+ in gen chem second semester and I still managed to get in somewhere. Similar to you, I showed a lot of improvement compared to my freshman year. I didn't explain it in my PS because I thought other stuff was more important relating to why I chose dentistry.
But yes, I think you have a chance. I feel like if you've brought your sGPA 3.5+ even with that C you should be fine. Obviously a lot more goes into giving out interviews and getting accepted but I don't think those two grades would hinder you. (I'm assuming you retook calc I)

I would recommend checking the school websites for their prerequisites. They'll typically give you a guideline of grades they expect in each course or simply state that they don't accept anything below a [insert grade]. An upward trend in grades is definitely a good sign, but before you apply you should have an idea of what each school's grade expectations are. Your circumstances growing up are unique and something that I believe admissions committees will welcome 🙂

Upward trend is positive. Demonstrating overcoming substantial hardships is a positive. You are more than the sum of a few grades. If you are passionate about dentistry, I say go for it!

That being said, you better put together a VERY strategic and thoughtful application that highlights your strengths and makes you stand out in spite of a few bad grades, and apply to a lot of schools.
