I am planning to have a child my 2nd year in dental school.
someone recommended that i take NBDE I the summer after my 1st year so i can give birth the summer after 2nd year. is that possible? am i going to kill myself in trying to prepare for NBDE and do my 1st year of dental school? i do want to specialize, so i should do well on my exams!

thanks!

Sure it's possible...all the DS1's at UNC take it after first year, and statistically do as well as those from here that take it after 2nd year. We cover probably 95% of the material covered on NBDE1 our first year (we do go to class and clinic through the summer after first year, though). The other 5% doesn't seem so critical since boars always seems to have a few craqy out-of-the-blue questions anyways. Besides, if you figure you learn that last 5% second year, you probably forget at least 5% of first year gross, biochem, histo, micro, etc by the summer of your second year.

Doing well on boards has little to do with where you go to school, and when you take them. It's much more due to how well you learn the info in class when it's taught (and remember it🙂), and how much effort you put into studying before boards.

Good luck.

I am not in dental school yet, but from my interviews I learned that some school's curriculum allows you to take the boards (step 1) after the first year.

Arizona and UOP students take their NBDE I after their first year.

So does Nova. I'd like to know if any girls here have had babies while in dental school. How do you cope?? I mean, sleepless nights...breastfeeding...doctor's appointments.

I'd like to know someone's story...if anyone's willing to share.

Thanks!!

If your school's curriculum prepares you in one year, take it then. If your school has NBDE I information spread out over the first two years, you will probably have to work incredibly hard to do well. I would talk to your administrators. Good luck.

It really does depend on your school. Our administration would not let us take it early, nor would they allow us to take it on computer.

There have been several women who have babies while in school. They have seemed to not miss a beat and have kept up just fine.
