Here is my situation:

I applied a bit late in the cycle to MD and DO schools. (Stats when I submitted: 3.61 overall, 3.3-3.4 science, 28Q (B/V/P = 10/10/8). Current stats: 3.569 overall, 3.37 science, 28Q (did not retake yet).)

Extracurriculars: Honors college graduate, LEAD Scholars (leadership program) alum, 100 hours (4 semesters, the maximum allowed) as a volunteer TA for human anatomy, 75 hours in chemistry "research" (my research partner was never there, and I ended up only being able to purify and synthesize a chemical, watch other students, and wash lab equipment), 150 hours (1.5 years) volunteering at a downtown hospital, club involvement (including one year as a President), volunteering elsewhere on campus that adds up to at least 50 hours, taught 3 classes of Junior Achievement, 1 semester proctoring exams for a large intro to organic chem and biochem course, one month mentoring a freshman biomedical sciences major (part of an experiment), six years working as a camp counselor, three years working with Pearson Education as a student rep, various notetaking jobs over my undergraduate years, one semester as a paid research assistant.

Shadowing: four hours with internal medicine (D.O.), at least a month shadowing family medicine (M.D. - this was done over winter breaks, spring breaks, and the summer I took my MCAT, but only until before the course started), six hours shadowing dermatology, six hours shadowing two urologists in the same practice (M.D. and D.O.)

I never owned a car, and I needed my savings to help me pay for living expenses, explaining why I also needed to hold the small jobs I previously mentioned. (My parents couldn't help me, because they didn't hold good jobs and also had to save money for my brother, who attends UF right now and is a sophomore.) I am currently enrolled in two courses that will end June 22: Molecular Biology I (which I am retaking, because I received a C the first time, at the very end of the course) and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases.

I received four interviews: one post-interview rejection (M.D.), two waitlists (D.O.), and one decision yet to be received because I just interviewed there a week ago. (This one will come in the mail, and the school does not allow calls to be made to them regarding decisions.)

As a precaution, I am applying to Masters' programs: one app finished, two almost done, and I can actually submit an app to St. George's as well.

I realize that the main reason I am in this situation is probably because I applied late, but I am trying to do whatever I can to be in a school this August. I realize that my application from last year is saved on AMCAS and AACOMAS and I can submit right when June 1 hits as long as I update minor things. (I do not feel I can revise my personal statement, since there hasn't been any significant events since I applied the first time.)

I realize that applicants can be pulled off waitlists at anytime, but I also know I can apply early for the next cycle, too. (My only concern is that if I reapply, but I end up getting accepted at a school this cycle, can I withdraw my application for the next cycle at any time?) If I have to reapply, I will resubmit in June, and when I get home, I will find a full-time job (to pay for a car, which my parents also cannot contribute to, since all we can afford is one car shared by the whole family), keep tutoring in my neighborhood, and continue to volunteer at local hospitals. (Most likely, I will volunteer at at least two hospitals to increase my hours quicker, and I will only be doing this on evenings and weekends when I can have access to a car.)

Any advice is kindly appreciated.

Thank you.

I'm always of the opinion that you can improve anything you work on. While you might not have new things to add to your personal statement, I'd have maybe your pre-med advisors or a professor read over your PS and see what their thoughts are.

It seems like you have pretty solid extracurriculars. What kind of master's program are you doing? That might be good way to boost your GPA and at least show the MD schools you're solid in the grades if you pull off an high GPA. Lastly, I'd retake the MCAT and apply early for whatever cycle you're thinking of entering.

I would reapply early this cycle. I'm in the same boat, waitlisted at a couple places. I really feel like the odds are pretty slim. Its kind of picking the lesser of two evils. It would suck to wait, not get in and then apply late again..... and oh well, if you drop money on primaries and get in, who cares, you're in!

Plan on reapplying simply because it is smart. you can easily withdraw if you get pulled off a waitlist. and revise your PS. Even if it isn't much, resubmitting one that is obviously not different (or basically not different) just shows laziness. when did you apply?

I cannot take the MCAT again this summer. I am currently taking two science courses (one of which is a retake) in hopes of boosting my GPA a bit further. The courses last until June 22, leaving me only with a month to study for a retake, which wouldn't be enough time for me.

I submitted my application in September (which I know is late, but I figured it would be better to submit this time than to not submit at all, especially since applying is a game of chance).

I am applying to Master's programs in Biomedical Sciences. The programs can both last for one year or two. (Both schools have options for accelerated programs, which is what I would be looking for.)

I am cancelling this thread, because I got accepted to a medical school!
