Hey Guys!

I'm a senior at a 4-year university. My cumulative GPA is around a 2.3 (with retake replacements: 2.86) at the moment. It will be around a 2.5 (with retake replacement: ~3.0+) after May. I am taking the GRE and I really hope that score will be high enough to kind of over power my low gpa. I have a ton of extracurricular activities/ shadowing/ volunteering/ work experience. I just don't know if it's smart to apply. What do you guys think? I really need a chance to show that my undergrad GPA does not define me. I was wondering if anyone knew of specific GPA enhancement postbac/masters programs that will help me go to DO schools. Preferably one that allows me to attend their DO school the following year (like PCOM's Masters in Biomedical Sciences gives you guaranteed interview upon completion with a certain GPA).

If not, I have no idea what to do with a gap year 🙁. Any advice will be appreciated, thank you!

Hi there,

It's a bit hard for me to give you an opinion without knowing more details about yourself to actually suggest a route that's best for you. I understand this route is hard and stressful, and some people on SDN can be harsh without knowing your situation/background. From the details you've provided, I honestly think you have a better chance of being accepted into the BMS program next year because:
1. It's almost May, which means there are less seats available. If you apply now, you won't be able to hear back until early June (assuming you send in all the requirements - LoR, transcripts, etc., asap).
2. Since your GPA is below the requirement, it's lowering your chances even more because adcoms are more selective of their potential students than previous years.

Also, in regards to your comment about the "guaranteed interview," the BMS program is not a linkage program into their DO program. Yes, you're likely to have an interview (GPA > 3.0 and minimum mcat 24 - old, 500 - new), but you're not guaranteed an acceptance, a few were not accepted after 2 - 3 attempts. BUT there are a small amount of people accepted into the DO program with MCAT below average. In any case, people in adcoms are very intelligent people, they can tell who deserves to be there. Anything is possible as long as you're realistic about your abilities and goals. I do think you have a better chance next year, but please don't let what I am saying discourage you and let it affect your goals. There are more than one route for you to reach your goals, but it just takes longer than others.

I'm currently a student at PCOM. I can answer any of your questions relating to the DO program, especially about PCOM, and will try my best to answer all of your questions as accurate as I can be. Please PM instead. I'll do what I can to help.
