Hey, everyone! this is a cool forum!!
I am now looking for a post-bac program in California. My career goal is MD/Ph.D. I wonder could I find a program that is more involved in research?

thanks!

Mills and Scripps seem to be the most well-known formal post-bacs here. There is also one at USC. A lot of people do classes on their own at a local CSU or at one of the UC extension schools. If you want research I would be sure to see if you can get these opportunities if you do one of the formal programs. Research was important to me (I was not 100% sure I wanted medicine or maybe a PhD) and that was one reason I left the state for post-bac and went to the University of Arizona. I enrolled as a 2nd degree student, got the degree in 1 extra semester, and had a lot of opportunities to do research since I was a degree seeking student. My other option had been a CSU school and I thought Arizona had better opportunities. That's not to say you could not find good option at a CSU. I'd look into that also. UCs are hard because they are so overcrowded so you may only be limited to extension classes. Good luck and feel free to pm me if you have more questions 🙂

Thanks for your reply. I actually went to Scripps Research Institute website to look for the program, but I couldn't find it. Do you know where I should search to find it?
Another question is that I have some financial concerns. Do these post-bac program offer any fellowship, financial aid, anything?

thanks a lot!

haha...big mistake. I now know Scripps means Scripps college instead of Scripps Institute.
Anyways, I took at look of all these colleges, but it seemed like they are pre-med programs, trying to boost up GPA. I don't want a GPA booster program, but a actually research program. Any suggestion? If there is none in CA, then I am willing to move!!

post-bac premed programs in California:
Claremont

Mills

Mills also has a program to give you a certificate in biochemisty to prepare you for graduate study. You might look into that... it seems more research focused than the typical premed program.

If you want a research program then maybe you should look into getting a 1-yr masters? I am assuming you have already taken the premed science classes? The Georgetown 1 yr masters seems popular. I believe USC and Stanford both have 1 yr masters also. You can do a search on this forum for threads about them.

Thank you thank you...
I know this question maybe is stupid to ask. However, when I looked into Stanford website, their application deadline for Master degree has passed. Do you think that there is anything I could do now? or any hope?

Well, it probably doesn't hurt to try calling. I mean the worst they can say is it's too late.

For research I would look into research institutes at hospitals and/or universities. Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland has a great research institute (I have been here for three years and am applying to MD/PhD programs this summer). You might consider volunteering or applying for a position if you have some experience. Anyway, let me know if you have specific questions.
