Are there any SMP programs where you do not lose a year by reapplying to med school? I do know that rosalind franklin university you do not lose a year, but if you get accepted you get into their med school, as a second year, the following year. Please let me know.

I could be wrong but I really don't think that is correct about RFU MBS and CMS.

There are several SMPs that have very high success rates in putting their students straight into med school, no gap year, either at the host MD school or at another MD/DO school.

There are no SMPs, to my knowledge, that allow you to go straight to 2nd year. In some cases you may not need to repeat M1 coursework that you high passed or honored during the SMP. If you don't go to the host med school, then you'd have to petition to get out of anything you high passed or honored. In no cases (afaik) can you skip out on M1 tuition or the coursework that's not included in the SMP. (SMPs don't generally include the clinical aspects of M1.)

Good for your buddy. If you wanted to, you could look at the coursework in his/her SMP, and compare it to the first year med school curriculum. I think you'll see they're not the same. Because of how med schools are accredited and insured, there's not a lot of flexibility in the approved and accredited curriculum.

So it would be interesting to find out what gives, and whether your buddy's experience would apply to you. Doubtful.

The BMS program at RFU gives you advanced standing as an M1 the next year since you've taken most of the M1 courses. You still have to take anatomy and a few other courses though.

Mmmkay so you have to do M1, do you have to pay tuition? Do you have to account for your time not spent in the M1 classes already taken?

That's a "lost year", regardless, per the original question.

Umm... not sure where I implied it wasn't a lost year by the OP's definition. Just clarifying the situation.

I didn't do the BMS program, so this is sort of second hand. I haven't heard that tuition is reduced for M1A's. If anything, I've gotten the impression that it isn't. M1A's do have to do extra stuff; I think there are a few certificate programs they can choose from. They can also do some M2 electives during M1 year, leaving them more free time later on. However, it doesn't come close to the amount of time spent on the M1 courses they already took. I get the impression that they have more time for research, they are more involved in extra-curricular activities, student interest groups, and student government, etc.
