Hi,

Brand new to SDN and excited to join the community of non-traditional pre-meds! 🙂

I've just started a formal 12 month post-bacc program in the South. Loving it so far except for one potential hiccup. I'm a California native and was planning to apply almost exclusively to CA/west coast med schools immediately after my post-bacc ends. I've just learned that most CA schools require either 1 or 2 semesters of college math (stats & calc). My formal post-bacc does not include these courses and I did not take them in undergrad.

Right now, I'm assuming my only option is to delay the application process by another year to take these two courses after my formal post-bacc ends. Ek!! Has anyone had this dilemma?

Finally, a secondary question for anyone that's been in this situation. How did you finance the additional two classes? I'm taking out a 5th year undergraduate loan for this year and doubt I'll qualify for more funding.

Thanks for any thoughts/advice!

You can take both classes this year while applying. You have to complete them before matriculation, but you can apply without them as long as you have a solid plan to get them done before you start med school. As for funding, I'd plan on working and pay out of pocket to take them at a state U if you have a cheap one near you.

Stats and Calc are both available at most community colleges. Usually it costs $200-$1000 to take a community college course, depending on your location. That's not too bad.

Edit: depending on your course load, it's not too late to either take them both this summer or take them during the post bacc program.

I took Calc few years ago at a california community college. it was cheap and easy.
