I don't think it matters if you are applying DO. You're GPA is already good enough for most schools.

Hey all!

Quick question. Some life things happened and I'm not doing as well as I'd like in my post-bacc due to family health issues and other strain. I'm considering leaving the program before getting grades so a 3.4 doesn't look poor after having a 3.6 undergrad overall GPA.

Will this negatively affect my applications if I apply next cycle? I'm not sure if the school generates a transcript with all 'W' or if they just assume I drop, I believe it's just considered voluntary withdrawal. I just know I have to report the coursework even if it was never complete, but want to know if it's going to make my life difficult down the road.

I started by post-bacc in July. Life happened, haven't been doing as well as I hoped. Trying to figure out what to do, withdraw from the post-bacc program altogether (its a once a year program so not like I could take a semester off) or stick out the semester.

Semester is 6 science courses (3 I've previously taken at my 4 year school). I want to know what withdrawing from the semester would do. I don't know how I would report this to AACOMAS. If you don't get grades at all for anything, are they still considered "W" or would I just need to report the program itself and no courses if I withdraw? That's what concerns me. If I withdraw technically (though voluntarily and there's no withdraw by date in the program) wouldn't I be stuck with 6 "W"s all for this one semester? And if so, will that look terrible for me.

Oh nvm I thought you meant you already had a bunch. I don't think a withdrawn semester would look that bad, but dropping out of a postbac program might. @Goro coukd you shed some light on this?

Yeah. I mean I have a shot without having a post-bacc at all, I just don't know if this looks worse than just not having enrolled in the first place

Maybe but I don't think DO schools scrutinize grades like MD schools do. I have like 14 C's on my transcript and my grades were not brought up in either DO interview. I think a withdrawn semester is a lot easier to explain than 6 W's scattered throughout your postbac.

I think the dean will be able to give you much better advice than I can as I can only relate on how my cycle went with my stats. In my opinion, you have a pretty good reason for a withdrawn semester as I think a severely sick parent would also be an acceptable reason to take a leave of absence from medical school. Most schools have a spot at the end of their secondaries where they ask if you have anything you would like to add. That would be a good place to state that you had to take a leave of absence from your postbac because of your parent's health.

My grades are worse than yours and it was never brought up in my interview so my experience says it's not a big deal in your case BUT I'd take the dean's advice over mine. I don't really have insider information lol. Good luck!

DO - 3.16 cGPA 3.44 sGPA 505 MCAT

That's my WAMC post with my stats, grade trend and ECs. As you'll see, when I decided to give medicine a go, I have a 2.9 with 140 credits. I did great my senior year (3.7) and did a 3.95 for my one year postbac. Even though my GPA is low (3.1) my grades never came up in my interviews and I think that's because of my grade trend which schools seem to highly value.
