No one responded on the pre-dental thread maybe ill have some luck here...

Hello,
My current GPA is what i believe not competitive (3.2), I found a college in Wisconsin that offers a non degree seeking graduate admission. Basicaly allowing me to take graduate courses but not towards any degree. If i were to apply and get into this instituition and do graduate level work more sucessfully than my undergrad do you think this would be an acceptable next step in strengthening my application? Or do you think taking the GRE and applying for masters programs is the best way to overcome a low undergrad GPA. Thanks for your time and comments, they are appreciated more than you know.

LOL...well from all of the reading i have done on post bacc work...i would say yes!!..adcoms are always looking for improvements...i have the same overall gpa as youdo...so i am in the same boat...plus i have done some reading as far as gpas go in dental school...and a book made by barrons assured me that a 3.4 was the average in some dental schools...so look into those dental schools becasue there had to have been kids that got at least a 3.2 to even out the kids that got a 3.6+...so i dont know ...but to answer your question....YES...it would def help...any type of improvement would!

I think an improvement on postbacc gpa is great to show them.... a friend told me an adcom once told them that you should get yourself past the 3.0 cutoff (if one's below it) and showing a grade improvement... and then he told him to focus on a high DAT score... hope that helps and best wishes!!!

also it's not a bad idea to check with the dean at the dental school that you want to go to... a good opportunity to do this is during the dental school tours your undergrad or local university's predent club hosts (you don't actually have to be a member... just ask them to keep you on their mailing list and attend the tour!)....i know somebody who did this, followed that dental school dean's advice and is now a first yr. dental student!! 👍 no worries, there is DEF hope!!!

Pretty much anything to improve your apps would be beneficial, and what you want out of the experience (hopefully not just a GPA boost).

Bakes, I am a post-bacc that has with a crappy undergrad gpa of 2.9. I took two years of post-bacc Bio and chem classes to earn a B.S. in Bio. I now have an acceptance (UIC) and two other interviews (UMich & USC).

My two cents is that you should go ahead and start taking classes at the school you mentioned since you will be able to get started immediately. What is most important is that you do well (all A's & B's) taking a full load of classes.

If you can, just take a semester/quarter of a non-degree student, then get accepted into a degree program (2nd B.S. or Masters). Working towards a degree will give you the ability to get student loans and it sounds better on your AADSAS application.

What d-schools are looking for is a drastic improvement in your grades. But they will only take you seriously if you take upper level classes at a 4-year university with a full-load of classes.

Make sure you get to know your profs since you need at least two letters of rec from science profs.

Your gpa really isn't that bad, so if you are not currently an undergrad student, I personally would just get enrolled into the Wisconsin program ASAP so that your AADSAS application will show all the classes that are enrolled in.
