Post-doc after dental school?

Anyone know if you can just get a post-doc after getting a DDS/DMD and go into dental research (such as a position at a university)? or do most dentists who go into research get a PhD too? I didn't know that it was possible (or common) to get a post-doc after a dental degree with no PhD. I'd love to hear more, if anyone knows anything about how common this is or how it works...

There is a DMD in our lab thats doing this exact thing (no phd). I'm at the Georgia Tech Emory Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues.
