hi~

i was wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction...i'm a currently in dental school and have found that there is little to no chance of an externship abroad during the course of my study. 🙁 i still don't want to give up hope of being able to study abroad (specifically in japan). does anyone know of any post-grad dental programs (GPR or specialty) that can be completed in a foreign country by a US dds grad and be honored upon return to the US? would i be required to take dental boards in the foreign country to apply for their post-grad programs?

i know this is a very specific question...but perhaps someone can steer me in the right direction in terms of where should i look for info regarding this subject...

thanks~

Hey Wasabi,

I have never heard of such specific program, especially Japan. I think that ucsf has really tight relationship with some programs in Brazil. You should ask Dr. Marshall and Dr. Featherstone about this. They have exchange fellows with those foreign dental school. I'm sure those two guys will be able to work out something for you.

Best,
Tink

Why not follow the KISS rule. Japan? Take their boards, pay their tuition, come back and take specialty boards here if they'd even accept it. Come on man. Do you have a thing for Japanese girls?😉

Why not enlist with the Navy. I had a few friends do it right out of dental school. Some went to japan, some to Germany. But some also were stationed in Oakland:laugh: (I'm from SF originally)

Hi wasabi

In Taiwan, we have a scholarship for students who want to study graduate, PhD programs in Japan. kolyosekei (?? do I pronounce it right? interchange association http://www.japan-taipei.org.tw/tw/ they have the website in Japanese) offers this grant to students in all fields, including dentistry. The Money is very generous and competition is low in the field of med/ dentistry.

I am pretty sure Japanese government offers the same kind of scholarship to US students, since there is an official relationship between the 2 countries.

to apply for Japanese dental programs, You have to pass the " Japanese language exam level 1 " which is the equivalent of Toefl, except that the level one is a lot more difficult than Toefl( lots of Kanji, and grammars of litterature level)
You also have to be prepared that your Japanese has to be extremely fluent, very few speak English well. However, all the dental terms are spelled with katakana, directly from pronunciation of English terms.

hope it helps,

good luck on your search
