hi~

i was wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction...i'm a currently in dental school and have found that there is little to no chance of an externship abroad during the course of my study. i still don't want to give up hope of being able to study abroad (specifically in japan). does anyone know of any post-grad dental programs (GPR or specialty) that can be completed in a foreign country by a US dds grad and be honored upon return to the US? would i be required to take dental boards in the foreign country to apply for their post-grad programs?

i know this is a very specific question...but perhaps someone can steer me in the right direction in terms of where should i look for info regarding this subject...

thanks~

hey...in response to your question, i see that, with an american dental degree, you are competetive and eligible at most countries for an externship, like for example, South Africa has one at Johhanesburg, the other countries which offer are Germany, Sweden, Japan, Australia, UK and a few other European countries.....
NBDE is NOT a criteria and in no way matters for those admissions as for what Ive found out....yeah what IS A MUST is a dental licence for atleast 1 state here and an official copy of your diploma; language is a prerequisite in countries like Germany, Japan etc
Now, coming to being honored here, I think international education is always "honorable" but certainly not accreditable!the ADA does not even think of "accrediting" any other education, other than those schools found in its own backyard!
I think study-abroad is great if you wanna hone up your research skills, and show your versatality in acquiring knowledge and various approaches to it; but, if you expect to be rewarded by asking the ADA to consider it as a form of a qualification/degree.....naaa....you better watch out!
hope this helps......
ps: on a personal front, I would suggest you to look out for programs in Germany, which has the N0.1 education system in the world and you simply dont have to pay any fees!!!

K'jal.

I couldn't agree more!!!. The ADA nor any specialty dental board in the US will recognize a foreign dental degree in any specialty. So plan ahead before you do that.

I think Japan will be a great place to further knowlodge about Dental Biomaterials, new technology in dentistry and things like that. I bet that will be really interesting.

I know Japan offers scholarships for different programs to nationals of some under developed countries. I know you may not fall under that category, but still you may want to try contacting the Japan Embassy here in the US, they might be able to guide you. Do so with the German and French embassy as well. I know they also offer scholarships in underdevelped countries, don't know about the US though..... At least in my country, those embassies are encharged of their scholarships and programs of study. Good luck!!!

Another option for an overseas postgraduate program would be any of the branches of the US Armed Forces. You will find that the Army and Air Force both have Commission on Dental Accreditation approved GPR courses. Some of those courses are offered at foreign bases and either the US Navy or Army may have a program at their base on Okinawa. Of course if you against military service its not much of an option. Getting shot at while performing a root canal may not be the best experience you ever had.

You can learn more at

I just looked at their website and there is a dental facility in central Japan called Camp Zama.

thank you all so much for your responses! 😀 it seems like if i'm going to have to plan this out carefully in order for it to work. it's as i feared/suspected...that ADA will not accredit the foreign training other than through the military. thanks for the leads...i'll do my research~ 🙂

btw, what are the chances that someone will be stationed at their choice of base station? I mean, if one asks to be stationed in Japan, they'll just sent you there 'cause you asked. Or will they send you wherever they feel like it. 😕
