I was wondering if there are any suggestions for things to do post graduation to improve one's application for emergency medicine? (my school doesn't have an EM advisor, so i'm appealing for the advice from the members of this forum).

The pd's i've talked to in general (not about this particular question) indicated that while research was helpful it would neither make nor break your application. Any contrary opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

to the op:

a little more info regarding your situation would be helpful. I finished my four years of medical school and am doing a one-year research fellowship as part of the "year-out" research programs (including Fogarty, Doris Duke, Howard Hughes, Sarnoff, CRTP, etc). So although I've "finished" medical school, I am still considered a medical student, and am applying as one this year in EM. My reasons for doing the year were partly personal (my significant other is a year behind me in medical school), but I've so far only received positive feedback during interviews regarding the fellowship. My research is in topics pertinent to Emergency Medicine, so although research isn't make or break, I think it has helped my application. Maybe I would have received more interviews if I had applied last year, who knows.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, I hope this was helpful. The deadlines for these programs are fairly soon, if not already past, so take a look at them now if this pertains to you. I am not an IMG, so cannot speak to that situation at all. Good luck.

Thanks for the help beast! I will look into doing that.

Aside from being an IMG i'm a decently competitive individual, 224/93 and 244/99 on the boards, past history as an emt, 2 publications, good core grades, school president. I recieved 6 interview invites this match and hope to match (but i'm planning for the worst!) i don't have my ecfmg certificate yet so many places won't look at my application.

Ocupa - you may be an attending but you should know a decent number of img's match in EM every year and though interviews were decreased, we still recieved a decent number of interview invites (i would hope you have some constructive ideas rather than treading on my dreams so callously)

I second that. When one can think of nothing constructive or helpful to add to the discussion, sometimes it is preferable to refrain from posting anything.

I am an IMG applying for second time. My credentials though not bad, I have just managed to secure 2 IVs this year (last year '0' IVs 🙁 for me). My scores have been decent (98/98/84) in all three steps, but still the situation is bad for me. 2 Non Clinical Admin Research, and 3 years of SICU Exp in home country (but still always placed in the list of old grads).

The only thing I could recommend is networking for getting IVs. 10 IVs (regardless of credentials will get you through)
