Post Interview Concerns

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think most places just want to make sure you aren't some weirdo!

How do they justify rejecting a person after an interview? I mean you have to have what they are looking for in the first place for them to interview you right? But I guess I'm wrong.

"Dear applicant,
Even though you have clearly demonstrated your qualification to attend University of so and so. Indeed, that is why you were granted an interview. However, we have to regretably inform you that we have decided to reject you because your tie did not match your suit which clearly indicate that you have a lack of interest in the field of dentistry. Good luck where else."

They interview you because you have to be able to TALK to people. They want to make sure that you can look somebody in the eye and present yourself properly.

You're going to be putting sharp, noisy, scary instruments into people's mouths. You need them to trust you...and they can't trust somebody that they can't even talk to.

If you can't talk to people, go into medicine.

Here is my take on interviews. First a school invites candidates that they are sure they can accept as long as they are not socially retarted. Then they invite people that they need for backup acceptances. These are the borderline students who they think could handle dental school but they want a way to judge them on another level and then they can also once again weed out the socially inept. So moral of the story is if your stats are good (3.5 GPA 20 DAT) then the interview is only for them to check on your social skills, but if you are borderline then you need to demonstrate to them that you are one they should accept, and that you will make a good and unproblematic dental student. Thats my two cents.

Why stress?

There is no point. After the interview, there is little to nothing you can do about it. Just go on with your life and make sure to check your mail every day or two.

are we talking interviews in general? or those interviews b/4 dec 1st?

Personally, it is like a job interview. They want to see if you
a) can present yourself
b) know a thing or two about hygene
c) can talk, and carry on a conversation
d) know how to listen (very important in this profession)
e) SHOW INTEREST in anything that they are saying
f) goes with e) the fact that u ask so many questions shows that u are really serious about wanting to go to dental school, and to their school especially
g) and last but not least, if u didn't get a chance to write something on the applicaiton, or would like them to know when considering your application, then that is the time to say it.

If you thought that all of your interviews went well, then you have nothing to worry about. You were probably articulate enough, that being questioned or talked to didn't phase you much. In my group I had few ppl that I personally would never allow near my face and my teeth.....

If u had four interviews already, u have nothing to worry about!
